My name is Alexis Barajas, I am Resident Mechanical Engineer with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). In 2019, I graduated from California State University, Los Angeles with a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering. I have two Bachelor of Science Degrees from Cal State LA in Mechanical Engineering and Manufacturing Engineering with a Minor in Mathematics.

As a resident engineer with the FAA, I oversee projects at different facilities all over the western pacific region. The projects can vary from an electrical upgrade on airport runways to fuel tank replacements for our backup generators. I enjoy that every project brings a different environment, people, and sometimes challenges. The best part of this job is not just seeing the projects from beginning to end, but that my work keeps people safe that are flying all around the world.

My passion is giving back to the community like so many people helped me through my career. I would not be here today if I did not have my family, friends, and teachers pushing me to be the person they knew I could be. For that reason, I try to take as many outreaches, mentor, and volunteer opportunities that I can do to be there for people that may need a hand or support

Claudia and her family migrated to the United States in hopes of a better life at the age of 12. Her family arrived at the City of Los Angeles and was she and siblings were immediately enrolled in school. She was enrolled in El Serrano Middle School as a 7th grader. Even though Claudia struggled to adjust to the new life style and new language, she managed to place in the top of her middle school class. Claudia then moved on to attend Woodrow Wilson High School where she joined many extracurricular programs, her favorite program being the Environmental Science Academy which taught her and brought awareness about the environment. Being involved in the Environmental Science Academy brought her close to her community by participating in many community service programs, such as; tree planting, beach clean-ups, caring for community gardens and street cleaning.
Through these activities she discovered that besides academics, she had a passion to help others and her community. Having discovered her passion, Claudia graduated Wilson high school and attended Cal State LA with a declared major in Civil Engineering.
Her time in Cal State LA was spent in her academics and volunteer work in student organizations, such as the American Society of Civil Engineer, and the Society of Women Engineers. She was heavily involved in the organizations, having held multiple executive board positions during her time at Cal State LA. In addition, Claudia was the student coordinator for the MESA Schools Program, which allowed her to continue her contribution to the community. Rosa Cortes-Mejia

Rosa Cortes-Mejia

Rosa Cortes Mejia a first generation DACA student studying Mechanical Engineering at Cal State LA. Rosa came to the US when she was 2 years old. She comes from a strong working family that works tirelessly every day. Her parents raised her to accept that nothing comes easy and that patience, dedication and hard work is the key to everything. With this mindset, she focuses on seeking a better life, not just for herself and her family but for her community as well. Both her parents did not complete middle school, so it was difficult for her to choose a major when she applied to universities. She chose engineering because she enjoys learning new things, likes to understand how things work, and why they are important. Studying a STEM career is a challenge however, nothing great comes easy. These struggles have guided her to several opportunities, one being Honda R&D Americas, where she is an intern this summer. Becoming an engineer is not her only goal as she plans to continue to give back to her community. This is how Rosa believes we can rise together in helping everyone you can to succeed.
