The John Cleman Graduate Fellowship provides assistance to new MA students in the English Department's graduate program. Dr. Cleman, a faculty member, former chair, and now professor emeritus in the Department of English, established the fellowship specifically to help newly admitted MA students. Because the focus of the fellowship is on incoming MA students, the application process is independent of the university's scholarship application process. Students eligible for the Cleman Graduate Fellowship apply directly to the Department of English.
Eligibility
The John Cleman Graduate Fellowship is to be awarded to the most promising applicant to the MA degree program in English. Students without a BA in English who are admitted to the English MA program on condition of completing a qualifying program of upper-division undergraduate coursework in English are also eligible after completion of at least two of the qualifying courses.
Application
Applicants must provide the following:
- two letters of recommendation from instructors in upper-division undergraduate courses in English to be submitted directly by the instructors and accompanied by the Fellowship Recommendation Form (PDF)
- personal statement
- evidence of financial need (can be included in personal statement)
- completed and signed application form (PDF)
Deadline
Completed applications must be submitted to the English Department Advisement Office (ET A638) by May 8, 2017 at 5pm. Mailed applications must be postmarked by May 8, 2017 and should be addressed to:
