English courses at Cal State Los Angeles involve students’ minds, hearts, hands, and voices. We pride ourselves on meaningful, critical interaction with a range of texts and ideas from the disciplines of American, British, and World Literatures; Creative Writing; English Education; Linguistics; and Rhetoric and Composition. In the Cal State LA classroom, students and teachers together think rigorously and deeply about how and why texts matter personally, ethically, and historically. In dynamically linking relevant coursework to community initiatives, the English Department at Cal State LA is committed to being one of the most genuinely engaged English departments in the nation. To this end, our students will demonstrate respect and collegiality as they become part of a diverse community that values equity, empathy, transparency, and rigor. Students will have opportunities to reflect upon and situate their own scholarship within this community of practice on campus and more broadly. Students will be able to reflect critically, socially and ethically on their role as scholars in the field, teachers, and practitioners, contextualizing their work within the global commons.
