Center for Engagement, Service, and the Public Good

The Center for Engagement, Service, and the Public Good was launched in 2014 to work on behalf of the students of Cal State L.A. and residents of Los Angeles to generate positive change across Southern California. The goal, as envisioned by President William A. Covino, is to transform the University into a hub of civic engagement and public service for our communities, our city, and our region. We are dedicated to service learning and neighborhood transformation and seek to be a catalytic force in the lives of students, faculty and the people who live in the communities we serve.

IServeLAAs the umbrella organization for campus-wide community engagement efforts, the center is Cal State L.A.’s headquarters for volunteer and service learning initiatives. The center will play a key role when the University completes an ambitious conversion from a quarter to semester calendar that will take effect in fall 2016. Accompanying this change will be new general education requirement that all students complete two courses that feature engagement with the surrounding multicultural neighborhoods and the greater Los Angeles area. Civic learning and community service initiatives administered through the center will be closely connected to students’ coursework.

Some engagement and service learning programs have operated for years at the University, while others were recently created. But they are now under the rubric of the Center for Engagement, Service, and the Public Good. These programs and offices include Educational Participation in Communities (EPIC), Great Outcomes East L.A.: A Pathway for College and Career Success, Jumpstart, the Office of Service Learning, and the Teacher Preparation Advisement Center. They all share a common goal of creating opportunities to give back to the community through volunteering, service learning, community collaborations and research projects that will make our neighborhoods better places to live.
