THE ROOTS OF L.A.

A historical marker on the Cal State LA Administration building notes that one of the 36 original California adobes was built in 1776 on the land that is now the University. In the 1850s, Basque rancher Juan Bautista Batz acquired the area through a Spanish land grant and named it Rancho Rosa Castilla.
