Position: Project Manager – Charging Eagles

Description:

The Charging Eagles is a new student competition at Cal State LA aimed to design, build, test, and integrate an advanced battery pack into a production vehicle. Kicking off in Fall 2023, the multi-year competition will provide an immersive hands-on learning experience for students to gain valuable engineering, manufacturing, and battery testing skills that transcend the classroom environment.

Teams will follow real-world industry milestones focused on battery design, simulation, controls development, testing, and vehicle integration and demonstration. Participants will also learn valuable project management, communications, teamwork, and problem-solving skills that will provide them an unparalleled educational experience and prepare them for future careers throughout the battery industry.

Minimum qualifications:

Candidate must hold an electrical, mechanical, or relevant engineering undergraduate degree. Must be enrolled in an engineering graduate program at Cal State LA. A completed Student Employment Application is required along with proof of course schedule to determine enrollment status.

Incumbents must possess the ability to learn and perform assigned work; work cooperatively with faculty, staff, and other students; and accept responsibility. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision; ability to complete tasks without prompting. It is important that the assistant be invested in the program, as he/she is an ambassador for the program to the outside world.

The incumbent must have working knowledge of English grammar, spelling, punctuation and proofreading; writing and editing skills. The incumbent must have strong computer skills using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, etc.)

Responsibilities:

This graduate student will manage the planning of the project deliverables and activities. This includes responsibility for developing the timeline and work items, tracking and executing all project-level activities, knowledge transfer, recruiting and retention activities, and managing all local sponsorship and fundraising activities.

The Project Manager (PM) will need strong technical and managerial skills and will work very closely with the Lead Faculty Advisor to plan, implement, and manage all competition deliverables, milestones, and finances to optimize the project execution in alignment with the proposed project plan. The PM will not only develop the overall project timeline and work plan but is also responsible for tracking and executing all project-level activities.

The incumbent will work with faculty, staff, and students on the project in a technical and management role, with a larger focus on the management of the project. The candidate will be responsible for managing at least two and up to four sub-teams. The sub-teams will be dedicated to collaborating with our vocational partner, communications and marketing, recruiting, and fundraising and outreach.  They will also work alongside an Engineering Manager to ensure that the engineering team has the resources they need and are achieving their objectives per the team’s schedule.

Salary:

Full-time GRAs are funded at $18,000 per academic year.

 

Work Schedule:

The candidate is expected to work 20 hours per week. This position is not eligible for benefits. This is a temporary appointment, contingent upon the availability of funds.

Responsibilities:

This graduate student will work very closely with the Lead Faculty Advisor to plan, execute, and manage all technical elements of competition deliverables and requirements. The Engineering Manager (EM) will lead undergraduate team members in the technical execution of the competition. This role is expected to provide technical continuity to the team throughout the 3 years of the competition and provide leadership and coordination of activities.

The incumbent will work with faculty, staff, and students on the project in a technical and management role, with a larger focus on the technical design of the project. The candidate will work alongside a Project Manager to meet deadlines and project goals. They will be responsible for managing up to 4 or 5 sub-teams. Each subteam will be led by an undergraduate student in the following areas: thermal, mechanical, battery management system and design, instrumentation and communication, and wiring harness. Undergraduate students will look up to the EM for guidance on how to successfully execute their role within the engineering deliverables of the competition. The EM will use their educational background to guide the design cycle of the battery and coordinate team members to undertake different areas as discussed.

Salary:

Position: Vocational Liaison - Charging Eagles

The undergraduate student will help coordinate joint activities between Cal State LA and our vocational partner (community college to be identified later). The candidate will ensure the two institutions operate as equal partners at the student level. Liaisons will be required to lead communication between university students and vocational students, support Year 1 Vocational Collaboration Plan and other pre-competition reports and participate in end of year competition presentations. The liaison will be under direct supervision of the project manager and work collaboratively with the communications and marketing lead, the recruiting lead, and the fundraising and outreach lead.

The incumbent is expected to be significant contributor to the Cal State LA Charging Eagles in the technical, management, and communications operations with a focus on maximizing the collaboration and productivity with the vocational school partner on the project.

Position: Fundraising and Outreach Lead – Charging Eagles

Non-engineering students are welcome to apply with previous fundraising and outreach experience. The candidate will be under direct supervision of the project manager and work collaboratively with the communications and marketing lead, the recruiting lead, and the vocational liaison.

The incumbent is expected to be significant contributor to the Cal State LA Charging Eagles Team in the technical, management, and communications operations with a focus on creating and managing the team’s fundraising and outreach efforts.

Salary:

This position will pay $9,000 per academic year.
