The Department of Applied and Advanced Studies in Education offers programs of study leading to a variety of credentials and certificates, graduate degrees and doctoral degrees.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Department of Applied and Advanced Studies in Education is to promote the knowledge, skills, and dispositions of professionals serving in urban schools, colleges, universities, and related agencies in government and business settings. AASE is a community of diverse disciplines with shared values that strives to prepare educators and professionals by offering certificates and Master's degrees in the area of Educational Administration, Educational Foundations, Educational Technology (Educational Technology Leadership and E-Learning and New Media Design), and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. In addition, AASE offers the Ed.D. in Educational Leadership, and general education courses in several of the disciplines above.

Courses in Educational Foundations, Research, Evaluation, and Statistics are offered as service courses to other degree programs and credentials.

In addition, the Division offers a doctoral program (Ed.D.) in Educational Leadership (Specializations in Pre-K-12 and postsecondary).

Graduate Programs

The Master of Arts (M.A.) in Educational Administration is a 30-unit program that integrates educational leadership theory with the requirements for the California Preliminary Administrative Services Credential.

The Master of Arts degree in Educational Foundations is an interdisciplinary academic program which draws on conceptual frameworks and methodologies from the humanities, social sciences, and behavioral science.

The M.A. in Educational Technology prepares educators to assume leadership roles in the field of educational technology.

The Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) program provides advanced academic and practical training in the theory and methodology of teaching English to speakers of other languages.

Certificates

The post-baccalaureate credit certificate program in Computer Applications in Schools is designed to prepare teachers to use computers and other technologies in their classrooms and to take leadership roles in their schools.

This postbaccalaureate credit certificate program is designed to prepare students to teach English as a second language (ESL) in post-secondary settings in the U.S. or to teach English as a foreign language (EFL) abroad.

The Certificate Program in Online Teaching and Learning is designed to meet the growing needs of online educators in a wide variety of teaching sectors like K-12 teachers, Higher Education faculty, Community College Professors, non-profits, governmental agencies and businesses that develop online training programs.

The post-baccalaureate Certificate for Teachers of English Learners provides added professional preparation and training in English as a Second or Foreign Language for teachers of all educational levels.
