Department Productions and Projects Auditioning:

Dreaming of Our Future/Soñando de Nuestro Futuro

Developed by the students at Cal State LA, this ensemble-based theatre project focuses on the plights and challenges of DACA students and immigrant families and communities against the backdrop of the rise of xenophobia and attacks against marginalized communities. This project weaves together personal stories, current news stories, the constantly shifting U.S. immigration policies and procedures, and a Call to Action for engagement and activism!

Urinetown, The Musical by Greg Hotis and Mark Hollmann

Winner of three Tony Awards, three Outer Critics Circle Awards, two Lucille Lortel Awards and two Obie Awards, Urinetown is a hilarious musical satire of the legal system, capitalism, social irresponsibility, populism, bureaucracy, corporate mismanagement, municipal politics and musical theatre itself!  Inspired by the works of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, Urinetown is an irreverently humorous satire in which no one is safe from scrutiny.

Directing Classes - TVFT 5190 and TA 4450.  There are 35 students that will need actors for their directing scenes throughout the semester!

The Department of Theatre and Dance at Cal State LA invites and welcomes actors from diverse backgrounds to audition for University productions. We recognize and value our diversity of cultures, racial experiences, ethnicities and gender identities.  We serve our student body by encouraging a more equitable, authentic and fair representation in our productions.

We acknowledge that many roles we list fall on the gender binary, but invite transgender, gender non-conforming, non-binary performers to read for the roles, cisgender or otherwise, they most identify with. Similarly, some roles identify racial and/or ethnic background as essential to the themes of a play.  With this in mind, where a role has specified a gender, ethnicity or racial background, we are dedicated to casting with an understanding that there are no set visual cues that universally define ethnicity, gender, ability or racial background. We encourage actors of all types, backgrounds, gender, and ability to audition.

Some Department policies:

  • It is department practice to cluster auditions in order for shows that have overlapping rehearsal cycles to be fairly cast.
  • All students must have at least a 2.5 GPA in order to participate in production. No exceptions will be made.
  • Theatre auditions are open to all Cal State LA students, regardless of major or course of study.
  • A student may not be cast in 2 lead roles when the rehearsal schedules overlap. Working as a Stage Manager or Assistant Stage Manager is considered having a leading role.
  • Priority in casting will be given to current Cal State LA students. Unless there has been prior approval and discussion with the Department Chair and the Season Committee, casting from outside the current enrolled student pool is not acceptable. Our commitment is to our current students.
  • The Department of Theatre and Dance and the MFA in TVFT are committed to a diverse and inclusive community which is reflected in our productions.
