Specializationuses statistical downscaling approaches, published climate reports and conceptually-based hydrologic models to ascertain the impacts of future climate variability on water quality and quantity in southern California. Climate variability is an evaluation of the extreme wet and dry weather patterns and their effects on water resources. Such effects include enhanced flooding events, increased peak flows and contaminant concentrations commonly found in urban areas (i.e. gasoline, E. Coli, metals, etc.). In order to offset these harmful impacts, urban planners and developers use best management practices (BMPs). There are various BMP types and material compositions used for construction and the long-term, and oftentimes, extreme short-term impacts are not understood. In my work, I use physically-based hydrologic models to evaluate the effectiveness of these practices that aim to promote infiltration into local groundwater aquifers, minimize contaminate transport and treat harmful constituents (i.e. E.Coli) in-situ
