Cal State LA faculty members, Dr. Emily Moss, Director of Bands and Music Department Chair, and Suli Xue, Violin Professor, recently journeyed to China to participate in the 4th Hong Kong International Music Festival.

The Hong Kong International Music Festival aims at promoting Chinese and Western music by presenting different types of music and art events and to foster exchange among music talents from around the world. This year’s International Music Festival showcased 4,000 emerging musicians that displayed their talents at the Tseun Wan Town Hall in Hong Kong.

Cal State LA Violin Professor, Suli Xue, serves as the music festival’s Artistic Director. Xue has earned high global acclaim through his unique approach to the art of music and is also known as one of the most outstanding Chinese-American violinists.

"Cal State LA has been an indispensable partner and stakeholder in the Hong Kong music festival. I’m thrilled for what lies ahead and hope the music festival will continue to encourage collaboration and establish Cal State LA’s international presence”, said Suli Xue.

Dr. Emily Moss was invited as a special guest to be a part of the final round jury panel and also hosted a special lecture at the festival. Thanks to Dr. Moss's support Cal State LA’s music department and university as a whole was showcased as a leader in music education.

Moss is passionate about music education and effective teaching. She has been invited as a guest conductor and clinician to universities and school districts both nationally and internationally.

“It was a thrill to represent Cal State LA at this International event. Some of the top music educators from the US and around the world were on the adjudication panel and we had the pleasure of hearing some very talented musicians mostly from China and Korea”, said Dr. Emily Moss.

The interest in the US music education system is high in China and this relationship with the Hong Kong International Music Festival has the potential to bring some wonderful students, both undergraduate and graduate, to Cal State LA in the future.
