Successful careers are built not only on technical knowledge, but also on persistence, relationships, and a willingness to keep learning. Through the Distinguished Speaker Series launched in 2025 by the College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology (ECST) Dean’s Advisory Board, accomplished professionals and industry leaders share their career journeys, offer practical advice, and inspire the next generation of engineers and computer scientists.

The series launched with two distinguished Cal State LA alumni who also serve on the Dean’s Advisory Board: Jay Donnell, a senior technology executive at Disney, and Jorge Ramirez, an engineering entrepreneur, inventor, and longtime university supporter.

Small Steps, Lasting Success
Jay Donnell, a Computer Science alumnus and Senior Vice President of Platform Engineering for Disney Entertainment & ESPN Technology, delivered the inaugural presentation in September 2025. Over his career at Disney, Jay has led engineering teams developing technologies that power Disney+, Hulu, ESPN, and digital experiences across Disney’s entertainment and theme park businesses.

Drawing on his journey from Cal State LA to leading technology teams at Disney, Jay shared candid lessons about leadership, communication, and navigating professional challenges. He encouraged students to build confidence through experience, embrace continuous learning, and approach setbacks as opportunities to grow.

“Small, consistent effort compounds,” Jay explained. “What you can control is showing up, staying curious, and getting a little better each day.”

Jay’s commitment to students extends beyond the speaker series. He encourages students to connect with him through LinkedIn for career advice and mentorship, particularly as they navigate the challenges of securing their first professional opportunities. He has also participated in Cal State LA’s AI & Careers Speaker Series.

A first-generation college student and U.S. Army veteran, Jay used his GI Bill benefits to attend Cal State LA, where evening courses allowed him to complete his degree while working.

“I wouldn’t have had the career I’ve had without Cal State LA and Glendale Community College,” Jay shared. “Now that I’ve had some success, I want to give back to the places that gave me so much.”

Building Your Team
The series continued on November 13, 2025, with Jorge Ramirez, a Cal State LA Electrical Engineering alumnus, former president of the Cal State LA Alumni Association, and recipient of the university’s Distinguished Alumnus honor. While attending Cal State LA, Jorge found his first technical job through the university’s Career Center. He continued working at the company and eventually purchased it with a group of investors, renaming it Heateflex Corporation and serving as its president and CEO.

Jorge’s central message was simple: no one achieves success alone. As a first-generation college student who worked while earning his degree, he recalled seeking help from a friend when struggling with Calculus I—an experience that reinforced the importance of reaching out to others.

“Build Your Team,” Jorge urged students, encouraging them to develop relationships with classmates, faculty, campus staff, and industry professionals who can offer support, share expertise, and create opportunities.

Jorge’s commitment to giving back extends well beyond the speaker series. He and his wife, Katie, have supported LAunchPad, which encourages high school girls to explore engineering careers, and established the Ramirez McAfee Scholarship to support students.

“I give back to Cal State LA because I appreciate the educational opportunity it gave me,” Jorge explained. He continues to be inspired by the determination and accomplishments of today’s students.

Giving Back Through Experience and Connection
Through the Distinguished Speaker Series and their continued engagement with ECST, Jay and Jorge demonstrate how alumni can make a lasting difference by sharing their experiences, mentoring students, and helping the next generation envision new possibilities.
