Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies
Students in the WGSS Certificate program develop advanced fluency in theoretical approaches to gender and sexuality as connected to other systems of power, including race and racism, nation and colonialism, disability and ableism, and class and capitalism. The program emphasizes interdisciplinary research methodologies, public humanities, the creation of original scholarship and creative work, and research justice in collaboration with marginalized communities. Students can pursue the WGSS Certificate as a stand-alone program, or in combination with a Master’s Degree at Cal State LA.
The Certificate program is designed for students who have already earned a B.A. degree to advance to graduate study in a wide range of disciplines, including Feminist and Gender Studies, Ethnic Studies, Law, Social Work, Public Health, Sociology, English, and others. Many students in the WGSS Certificate program are working professionals in social services, museums, K-12 schools and universities, media, advertising, human resources, and community-based organizations who seek additional knowledge and skills related to issues of gender and sexuality.
Our alumni from the Certificate program include college professors, high school teachers, librarians, medical school and law school students, social workers, anti-violence community organizers and trainers, and more!
The total number of units required for Post-Bacc. Certificate in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies is 6 units in the WGSS core requirements, and 9 units of electives. Students pursuing a Master’s in another discipline at Cal State LA may double-count some of their WGSS Certificate courses towards their graduate program.
