The PopeTech web accessibility testing and reporting tool is an enterprise site-wide automated accessibility tool that crawls our entire domain to identify potential accessibility errors. The tool's user-friendly dashboard interface is based on the single-page WAVE accessibility service. As a Drupal content editor, your account access to PopeTech will provide you with the ability to scan your whole site, and it will provide information on the errors that apply only to the content you can change in your Drupal role.
ITS Accessibility utilizes this tool to monitor our entire domain and provide reports on automated accessibility findings.
Once the website is crawled and scanned, you’re ready to analyze your accessibility baseline in the Dashboard.
First, let’s get familiar with the result types in the dashboard. The Dashboard page populates with accessibility data after web pages have been scanned. Pope Tech organizes the accessibility data into six result-type categories.
- Errors - Accessibility errors that should be prioritized and fixed.
- Broken Links
- Empty Links
- Empty Headers
- Empty Tabler Headers
- Contrast - Specific accessibility errors related to color contrast should also be prioritized and fixed.
- Alerts - Areas of the webpage that could be an accessibility concern, like non-HTML files and videos. These should be checked to see if it is an issue or not.
- Structure - Identifies any structural HTML, like headings and lists. Structure plays a vital role in accessibility, so review structural elements to see if any cause accessibility issues.
- Features - Elements of your website that probably improve accessibility. They should still be checked to make sure they're implemented correctly.
- ARIA - ARIA, or Accessible Rich Internet Applications, refers to ARIA HTML used to make the page structure more accessible. Not all HTML elements have accessibility built into them, so ARIA is used to add accessibility. Most ARIA items require a manual review to see if they're used properly.
All Drupal content editors have access to PopeTech, but we encourage any campus member interested in requesting a PopeTech account to request PopeTech access by emailing us.
