The bilingual pathways at Cal State LA provide bilingual teachers and bilingual teacher candidates with the opportunity to obtain a Bilingual Added Authorization (BAA) in Spanish or Mandarin. The BAA prepares you to better serve bilingual learners in English-medium or dual language settings. If you are bilingual, add a BAA and join the movement to advance bilingualism in our communities.

Mission and Vision

Bilingual Programs at cal State LA

The vision of the Bilingual Pathways at Cal State LA is to prepare bilingual students to become bilingual teachers and to advocate for reclaiming the ancestral and intergenerational linguistic practices of communities. Through the Bilingual Pathways, the goal is to embrace students’ full linguistic repertoires and ways of being/ thinking/ feeling by creating spaces where students can translanguage while simultaneously building on their pedagogical Spanish or Mandarin. We acknowledge that there are multiple forms through which we communicate and that all forms are valid. Working with a critical consciousness, we reject the hegemony of English and the English-only policies that, for many years, through colonization and the formation of the nation-state, have oppressed our communities. We work to create dual language bilingual education programs where racial and linguistic justice are a priority.

Student Voices

“I feel like a part of home is with me. Being able to be part of the ULRN bilingual pathway makes my experience as a student feel more comfortable and that I can identify with something.”

“My experience [in the bilingual pathway] has been empowering. I feel more comfortable and confident with speaking, expressing, and writing in both languages. Most importantly, I feel reconnected with my language. If my experience has been this positive, I can only imagine the difference we can make when we embrace all aspects of being bilingual and the impact we can create on our students and families.”
