BIOGRAPHY: Carolyn M. Dunn, MFA, PhD., is an Indigenous artist of Cherokee, Muskogee Creek, and Seminole descent on her father’s side, and is French Creole (French-Canadian, African, Tunica/Choctaw/Biloxi/Ishak) on her mother’s. Her life as a storyteller encompasses both poetry and playwriting with works about family, grief, resilience, and the landscape in all genres and in between. In addition to the award-winning Outfoxing Coyote (That Painted Horse Press, 2002), her books include Through the Eye of the Deer (with Carol Zitzer-Comfort, Aunt Lute Books, 1999), Coyote Speaks (with Ari Berk, HN Abrams, 2008) Echolocation: Poems, Stories and Songs from Indian Country: L.A. (Fezziweg Press, 2013), The Stains of Burden and Dumb Luck (Mongrel Empire Press, 2017), two forthcoming titles, The Frybread Queen, Soledad, and Three Sisters: Three Plays by Carolyn Dunn (No Passport Press, 2022) and Decentered Playwriting, coedited with Leslie Hunter and Eric Micah Holmes, Routledge, 2023). and more. Her plays The Frybread Queen, Ghost Dance, and Soledad have been developed and staged at Native Voices at the Autry, and her current work in progress is the pow wow comedy entitled Chasing Tailfeathers. Stage acting credits include The Bingo Palace, Citizen, Desert Stories for Lost Girls, Neechie-itas, Sliver of a Full Moon, and the musicals Distant Thunder and Missing Peace. She lives part-time in Los Angeles and part-time in Oklahoma with her family.

Tanya Kane-Parry - Professor of Theatre

BIOGRAPHY: Tanya Kane-Parry: Director/choreographer in theatre, opera and dance. Artistic Director of Opera del Espacio. Full-time faculty in the Department of Theatre and Dance since 2001. Teaches acting, dance, Viewpoints, devising theatre and more. Credits include: I’ve Fallen/Clap Off! at Highways Performance Space; The Way Of Water at Cal State LA, Bootleg Theatre, Cal Poly Pomona, Hollywood Fringe and South Coast Rep’s SCRamble; Meet Me @ Metro II and III ; Space: The Final Frontier presented at SOSE Company Creation Festival; Private in Public  at SoCal Dance Invitational Concert and World Dance Alliance-Americas in Honolulu; Triple [Inter]sect dance concert at Highways Performance Space; multiple site-specific performances - desert ruins at Llano del Rio, Downtown Art Walk, Brewery Art Walk, Echo Park Art Walk, The Series at the Standard. Additional credits include productions at Long Beach Opera, LA Phil, Festival Opera, Opera Omaha, Houston Grand Opera, Washington National Opera, Los Angeles Opera, Canadian Opera Company, Liceo Opera (Barcelona), National Opera of Bordeaux and Angels Vocal Arts. Most recent project was created collaboratively with students in the Department: Dreaming of Our Future/Soñando de Nuestro Futuro, a live-streamed performance centered on the challenges and terrorization of immigrants in the US. Tanya has lived and worked in Spain, France, the former Soviet Union, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Peru and Japan. She is fluent in Spanish and French and conversational in Russian and just spent the past 3 months volunteering in Poland and Ukraine supporting the Ukrainian refugees and orphaned pets suffering due to the Russian invasion.

BIOGRAPHY: Karyn Lawrence is an Assistant Professor in Design in the Theatre Arts and Dance Department. She earned a B.A. in Drama and a B.A. in Psychology & Social Behavior from the University of California, Irvine in 2009. She earned her Master of Fine Arts Degree in Lighting Design from the University of California, Irvine in 2012. Karyn is a theatrical and entertainment lighting designer based in Los Angeles. Selected regional/local theater credits include Center Theatre Group, South Coast Repertory, La Mirada Theater, East West Players, Ebony Repertory Theatre, Boston Court Pasadena, The Pasadena Playhouse, A Noise Within, International City Theatre, Antaeus Theatre Company, and Arizona Broadway Theatre. She is the resident lighting designer for the New Swan Shakespeare Festival in Orange County. In addition to lighting for the stage, she is Radiance Lightworks’ lead lighting designer for Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood. Her work has also been seen internationally in Italy, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Romania.

BIOGRAPHY:  STEPHEN ROTHMAN is a Full Professor at California State University, Los Angeles’s Department of Theatre and has been named one of the University’s Outstanding Professor Award winners. He served as founder and artistic leader of the revitalized Pasadena Playhouse (the State Theatre of California). He also served as artistic director of the Sacramento Theatre Company. His directing credits include more than 100 plays in 16 different States for 40 different theatre companies. He is especially proud of his work with Deaf West Theatre where he has directed numerous American Sign Language (ASL) productions. His most recent directorial work for Deaf West was their production of AMERICAN BUFFALO which starred 2022 Academy Award-winning actor Troy Kotsur and 2021 Academy Award-nominated actor Paul Raci. For American television, he spent two seasons directing episodes of THE NEW WKRP IN CINCINNATI.
