John Lion, a visionary theatre artist, was the founding artistic director of the Magic Theatre in San Francisco. He played a pivotal role in launching the early careers of playwrights such as Eric Bogosian, John O'Keefe, Adele Shank, Lynne Kaufman, and Sam Shepard. Renowned for his dedication to nurturing new voices, Lion was a champion of avant-garde theater, Beat poetry and performance, and the theatre of the absurd. He was also deeply involved in the Kennedy Center's National College Theatre Festival and served as an active leader in the Bay Area's theater community.
Tragically, Mr. Lion passed away suddenly in 1999, just one day before he was scheduled to join the faculty at Cal State Los Angeles as Department Chair and Professor. In recognition of his lifelong commitment to fostering emerging playwrights, the faculty at Cal State LA chose to honor his legacy by naming the university’s annual playwriting festival after him. The John Lion New Plays Festival is open to submissions from all Cal State LA undergraduate and graduate students. Finalists are selected by the Theatre and Dance faculty, and their works are presented as full productions during the mainstage season.
2025 marks the 27th Anniversary of the John Lion New Plays Festival.

Laurence Carter (Playwright, Who-Dun-It?) is a senior at Cal State LA and while not a Theatre major, he’s been involved in many aspects of the arts for many years of his life. Starting out on the cast side in community productions as a kid (Sound of Music, Seussical, Annie, and Grease), they shifted to a crew role in middle school and quickly became engrossed in the work. In high school, they worked as the lead of the props department for The Crucible and The Addams Family Musical and was an ASM for Oedipus. In addition to their play Who-Dun-It? being presented, they are also head of props for the entire festival. As a Television, Film, and Media Studies major, they have written, produced, directed, and taken on many other hats for many short films and webseries, staying hard at work to exert as much creativity as they can.
