Description
Traci Akemi Kato-Kiryama talks about their journey from Cal State Fullerton into their central role in several artistic communities around Los Angeles, their meaningful work in community building in Little Tokyo and how to get over those early nerves when you're first out of school. How do you engage in the community outside of school or reach out to people you admire? Where do you even begin? Their work as an author with Write Large Press, creating Tuesday Night Cafe in Little Tokyo, devising theatre with PULL project Ensemble, and participating as an Artivist in groups that include Vigilant Love, the Okaeri LGBTQ+ Network, Nikkei Progressives, and the National Nikkei Reparations Coalition, gives TKK a unique perspective on community work, including its costs and benefits. Finding meaningful work within your community can bear fruit for you not only professionally, but in finding purpose in the work that you do. And you can begin while you're already in school!
