The Philosophy Department invites you to join us for a talk by Ann Garry, Professor of Philosophy, Emerita, Cal State University, Los Angeles. How To Think About Abortion: Can Philosophy Help?"
Since Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health was decided in June 2022 articles concerning abortion have flooded most media. To list just a few kinds: personal narratives; theologically based views that fetuses are persons with a right to life that outweighs other considerations; arguments based on political or moral principles about the autonomy or freedom of choice of everyone of childbearing age; statements of constitutional principles (or broader legal principles) concerning, e.g., liberty, fairness, religious freedom, history of slavery, or others. I hope to help audience members sort out these views, figure out what’s assumed and implied by them, determine which views might be compatible with others (or not). In short, how to think about abortion.
