The Department of Mathematics at the California State University, Los Angeles consists of 14.5 tenure-track/tenured faculty, and over 50 lecturers and graduate teaching associates. We currently have about 140 students in the 4 options of our BS program and 35 students in our MS program.
We offer a Master of Science degree as well as a Bachelor of Science degree with four different options: Applied, General, Integrated Teaching and Traditional Teaching. In addition to its major programs, the department supports two undergraduate minor programs as well as two approved Subject Matter Programs for the Single Subject Mathematics waiver and the Foundational Level Mathematics Waiver.

Fall MAA Meeting @ Our Campus!
The Fall 2026 meeting of the Southern California / Nevada section of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) will be held at Cal State LA on Sat., Oct. 24. Alongside MAA, our dept. is organizing and hosting this event. Details will be posted soon on the MAA section website.
Master's in Mathematics
Join the Cal State LA Master’s in Mathematics program to get set up for success in applying to, being admitted to, and thriving in a PhD program in Mathematics. Students who apply, are admitted, and enroll in Fall 2026 can get their application fee reimbursed.
International Math Conference
This past summer, Cal State LA welcomed the Permutation Patterns International Conference to campus for a week of collaboration and learning. There were 45 participants in total, of whom about half were faculty and half were students, from universities across the United States, Canada, Europe, and Hong Kong.
Data-driven math education grant
Cal State LA and Pasadena City College have received a half-million dollar NSF grant to advance data-driven math education. Read this article for more information.
Student opportunities
There are plenty of programs, often in the summer, to guide students through the process of doing original research in math. Career panels and other events of interest also take place from time to time. In addition, several programs provide mentoring or other support for advanced studies in mathematics. Pólya Award
Congratulations to three former Cal State LA mathematics master's students: Angel Carrillo, Jonathan Cervantes (shown above), and Francisco Leon. They received the 2026 George Pólya Award, which recognizes expository excellence, for an article they co-authored when they were students here.
Math Gym
The Math Gym is a great place for students in Precalculus, Calculus I, and other fundamental math courses to "work out" their math skills with help from "coaches." Details about hours, location, etc.
