REQUEST FOR APPROVAL OF A TERMINAL DEGREE OTHER THAN A DOCTORATE
Department: Theatre Arts and Dance
Area of Specialization: Acting/Directing
Terminal Degree: MFA
1. Why is this degree more relevant for this position than a doctorate?
The MFA is considered the professional as well as the terminal degree in Acting/Directing; therefore, the PhD is not required for promotion.
2. What is the availability of a doctorate in this field?
The PhD is not prevalent in the Acting/Directing field.
3. Does this degree provide a faculty member with the necessary background to do research, scholarly, or creative work in the University?
Yes. Research and creativity are essential in the preparation for any acting or directing performance, especially when doing a "period piece." 4. Is there a requirement of the specialized accrediting agency related to terminal degrees of faculty in the department? If so, what is that requirement?
No, we are not members of the National Association of Schools of Theatre. However, we do, where possible and appropriate, adhere to its basic principles. Budgetary constraints and philosophical issues, unfortunately, make membership in this organization impractical.
5. What are the educational requirements for similar positions at comparable campuses, such as UCLA, CSU Long Beach, USC, CSU Northridge, Claremont Colleges, and CSU Fullerton?
