The Commuter Services Office provides faculty, staff and students with an extensive Rideshare Program. The following programs are available to assist you in your commute to Cal State LA.

U-Pass Program Fall 2024

The Metro U-Pass is a reduced-fare transit pass, offering college students unlimited rides on any Metro system in LA County that accepts TAP, including all Metro buses and rail, as well as all Foothill Transit local buses county-wide and the Foothill Silver Streak (at all departing stations), City of Commerce Transit, Culver City Bus, Gardena Transit, LA DASH, Torrance Transit, Long Beach Transit, Montebello Bus Lines, Norwalk Transit, Pasadena Transit, and Santa Monica’s Big Blue Bus.

The Fall 2024 Metro U-Pass is $93.50 and is valid from August 19, 2024, to January 26, 2025. The U-Pass is subsidized by Metro, The University Student Union, Cal State LA. Transportation Services, and the Student Success Fee. 

Fall 2024 Sales Process

Students can now opt to have their U-Pass for the Fall semester using the Metro TAP App. This new transition will allow students to use a mobile device for their fare, thus elimination the need to carry a physical TAP U-Pass card.

PLEASE TAKE A FEW MINUTES TO READ THIS INFORMATION CAREFULLY TO UNDERSTAND THIS PROCESS.

A 6-digit code will be required to activate your semester U-Pass. This code will be uniquely created for you when you make your on-line purchase. This code must be activated within 24 hours from your purchase or within one business day from your purchase.

Where Can I Find the Activation Code? When an on-line purchase has been made for a U-Pass, this unique 6-digit code PERMIT/CODE # will be generated. This PERMIT/CODE # can be found:

  • On your receipt, next to the PERMIT/CODE#
  • On the emailed receipt, next to the PERMIT/CODE#
  • After you make your on-line purchase in your parking account under the PERMITS on the upper left-hand top of the page, then under the All Active Permits section under “Permit #".

 For First Time U-Pass Purchasers – Please follow these instructions

  1. Complete the mandatory Metro Survey for first-time U-Pass purchases
  2. Please forward the Metro email confirmation to [email protected] with the subject to read: New U-Pass Confirmation
  3. Commuter Services will respond to your email withing 1-2 business days with information on the next step to purchase your U-Pass.

Renewing U-Pass for Students

Enrolled students who already have previously purchased a U-Pass can renew online through the MyCalStateLA portal:

  1. Log into calstatela.aimsparking.com using your campus credentials.
  2. Click on the icon labeled Purchase U-Pass.
  3. Follow the prompts and complete your purchase online.
  4. You will receive an email from [email protected] confirming your purchase.
  5. Your receipt will have a 6-digit activation code listed  next to PERMIT/CODE#.
  6. Download the Metro TAP App on your phone, activate your 6-digit code.
  7. Your U-Pass will become effective on the first date of the Fall semester, August 19, 2024.

ACTIVATION CODE PROCEDURES (Metro APP) – ALL USERS

For All Users (New and Renewals who prefer a Digital Card on their mobile device) activating your U-Pass using your unique 6-digit PERMIT/CODE#

Please have your receipt from purchase to follow these next set of instructions.

  1. Download the Metro TAP App on your mobile phone.
  2. Log In (if you already have a TAP Account) or create a new account on the Metro TAP App
  3. Add TAP card to wallet
  4. Add Use Code
  5. Enter the 6-digit unique PERMIT/CODE#, then continue PLEASE NOTE: This 6-digit code can only be used one time!
  6. Your card is now activated and is valid on the first day of classes

ACTIVATION CODE PROCEDURES (Physical Card for Existing UPass Users)

For All Users (Renewals)* who prefer to carry their physical card U-Pass.

Please Note: If you have already activated your PERMIT/CODE# using the Metro Tap App, you cannot activate your card doing this process.

  1. Go to www.taptogo.net/calstatelaUPASS
  2. Enter your 20 digit U-Pass card #. This is the number on the back of your TAP card
  3. Enter your 6-digit unique PERMIT/CODE# from your receipt
  4. Hit Submit
  5. Your card is now activated and is valid on the first day of classes.

PLEASE NOTE:

  • Physical cards will NO LONGER be available or issued for Fall 2024 Semester.
  • The 6-digit PERMIT/CODE# can only be used one time!

Lost Your U-Pass? (Physical Card Holders Only) PLEASE FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS There is replacement fee for a lost U-Pass. Contact Commuter Services at [email protected] for information and clearance to purchase a replacement.

FAQ’s

All currently enrolled students are eligible.

No, students cannot possess a Cal State LA semester parking permit and a valid U-Pass at the same time.

 

Yes, you must have a valid Cal State LA student ID. If you do not have your campus ID, you must obtain one from the campus OneStop office.

 

For the Fall 2024 semester, the U-Pass will cost $93.50 for 23 weeks. This cost of the pass will be prorated as the semester continues.

 

U-Pass is valid on all local Metro bus and rail, as well as Foothill Silver Streak (between El Monte and Union Station only), Culver City Bus, GTrans, LA DASH, Torrance Transit, Long Beach Transit, Montebello Bus Lines, Norwalk Transit, Pasadena Transit, and Big Blue Bus.

 

U-Pass is not valid on Metrolink. U-Pass is valid on all local Metro bus and rail, as well as Foothill Silver Streak (between El Monte and Union Station only), Culver City Bus, GTrans, LA DASH, Torrance Transit, Long Beach Transit, Montebello Bus Lines, Norwalk Transit, Pasadena Transit, and Big Blue Bus.

 

For the Fall 2024 semester, physical U-Pass cards will no longer be distributed.  Students must download the Metro TAP App  and activate the digital U-Pass with the activation code from their receipt.   For those students who have lost their physical U-Pass and are requesting a replacement, they will no longer be issued a card.  If you have questions, please contact Commuter Services by email at [email protected]

 

For the fall 2024 semester, the U-Pass is valid for 23 weeks beginning August 19, 2024 to January 26, 2025..

 

Yes, but we strongly recommend that you load the U-Pass that was originally issued to you when you purchased your first U-Pass. This will help your record with Commuter Services stay current and up to date.

 

Each student must activate their U-Pass after their on-line purchase with a unique 6-digit PERMIT/CODE # from their on-line receipt within 24 hours from purchase. The failure to do so will not make the U-Pass valid on the first day of classes.

Once activated, the the U-Pass can't be added to the app or removed from the app and added to a TAP Card. However, when the semester ends, then your U-Pass card can be added to your mobile device with a new activation code.

All lost U-Passes must be reported lost/stolen to Commuter Services first via email at [email protected]. The replacement cost is $25.

 

The U-Pass is a Metro transit pass sold by Cal State LA and is a non-refundable item. All sales for U-Pass are final.

 

Enrollment must be completed first to purchase a U-Pass.
