MS in Environmental Science

The M.S. in Environmental Science focuses on addressing and mitigating critical environmental issues such as water quality, air pollution, climate change, sustainability, and conservation, equipping students to become leaders in solving complex environmental challenges. The degree offers four specialized tracks:

  • Environmental Biology: This track emphasizes research in conservation, pollution, and global environmental changes.
  • Environmental Engineering Science: Focused on addressing environmental challenges through engineering solutions, this option covers issues like pollution of air, soil, and water, as well as sustainability efforts.
  • Environmental Hydrology: Students in this option study the hydrologic cycle, focusing on water pollution, wetland and watershed management, and hydrological modeling.
  • Geospatial Sciences: This track develops expertise in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing, providing both theoretical and practical skills for spatial data analysis.

Road Map

The program also offers two distinct academic pathways:

  • Professional Experience: Designed for students seeking to enter the workforce directly after completing their master's degree, this option prepares graduates for careers in government, industry, or the non-profit sector.
  • Research Experience: Designed for those who wish to pursue doctoral studies, this path is ideal for students aiming for research roles in academia, government, or industry

  • Cal State Apply Filing Period opens October 1, 2024, through March 15, 2025. M.S. in Environmental Science offers Spring and Fall Admissions - refer to the Admissions Office for future filing periods.
  • NOTE: There is NO seperate department application. The department application is integrated into Cal State Apply Q4. Applicants only need to complete the application on Cal State Apply.
