About the Program
Cal State LA will launch a new Bachelor of Science in Applied Environmental Science in fall 2027, preparing students to address pressing environmental challenges, including climate change, urban sustainability, water resources, pollution, resource stewardship, and environmental justice.
Housed in the Department of Geography, Geology, and Environment, the interdisciplinary program emphasizes hands-on learning and addresses environmental challenges facing Los Angeles and surrounding communities. With a focus on issues such as drought, pollution, flooding, and urban sustainability, the program aims to prepare students to respond to environmental needs in densely populated urban areas.
What You'll Study
Designed with career preparation in mind, the curriculum combines earth, water, climate, and physical sciences with geospatial and data sciences, chemical processes, economics, and project management. Through fieldwork, laboratory experience, and computational training, students will develop the scientific knowledge, technical expertise, and communication skills needed to address real-world environmental problems and support informed decision-making.
Students can also select electives in physical and geospatial sciences to deepen their expertise and tailor their education to their career goals.
