Cal State LA Geography Major Colin Montoya Awarded National AAG Scholarship

Junior Geography major Colin Montoya has been named the recipient of the Darrel Hess Community College Geography Scholarship from the American Association of Geographers.

The national scholarship recognizes outstanding community college students who plan to continue their studies as geography majors at four-year colleges and universities. Funded by Darrel Hess, author of McKnight’s Physical Geography: A Landscape Appreciation, the program awards two $1,500 scholarships annually to support students as they continue their academic journeys.

As part of the award, Montoya will receive a $1,500 scholarship to support educational expenses along with a formal certificate of merit. Recipients will be formally recognized during the AAG Annual Meeting, taking place March 17–21, 2026.
