This page provides guidance on the prerequisite structure of precalculus and calculus classes for students in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) and Exercise Science majors.

Depending on the Math Placement Category, this course sequence will begin either with ESM 1082, MATH 1081, or MATH 1082, and will be followed by MATH 1085, Discrete Mathematical Models. Either one of these courses will fulfill the GE Block B4 requirement for your major.

Course overview:

  • MATH 1081 (Precalculus: Functions) is the first half of precalculus.
  • MATH 1082 (Precalculus: Functions, with lab) is equivalent to MATH 1081. It has exactly the same course content as MATH 1081, but also provides an integrated review of algebra skills needed in precalculus.
  • ESM 1082 is the Early Start version of MATH 1082 with identical content, that is, it can be used in lieu of MATH 1081 for prerequsite and program requirements.
  • MATH 1085, Discrete Mathematical Models will introduce you to how the functions you learned about in MATH 1081 (or equivalent course) are used in the life sciences. You will also learn about discrete models.

If you are a Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Geology, Mathematics, or Physics major, then depending on the Math Placement Category, this course sequence will begin either with ESM 1082, MATH 1081, MATH 1082 OR MATH 1040. Either one of these courses will fulfill the GE Block B4 requirement for your major. You may also place directly into calculus if you have taken any exam that gives course credit (see below) or have successfully completed the ALEKS placement during summer.

  • MATH 1081 (Precalculus: Functions) is the first half of precalculus.
  • MATH 1082 (Precalculus: Functions, with lab) is equivalent to MATH 1081. It has exactly the same course content as MATH 1081, but also provides an integrated review of algebra skills needed in precalculus.
  • ESM 1082 is the Early Start version of MATH 1082 with identical content, that is, it can be used in lieu of MATH 1081 for prerequsite and program requirements.
  • MATH 1040 (Precalculus) combines MATH 1081 and MATH 1083 in a single semester.
  • MATH 2110 Calculus I
  • MATH 2120 Calculus II
  • MATH 2130 Calculus III

Note that your major may not require the full sequence, or may require additional math courses beyond calculus. Please check with your major advisor.

If you have taken the AP Calculus, CLEP, or International Baccalaureate (IB) exam, you may get credit for some calculus courses if you scored high enough.

Note: Memo from chancellor's office says that scoring 50 or better on CLEP College Algebra: Trigonometry or on the CLEP Trigonometry exam earns 3 semester units. According to web, these exams were replaced by the CLEP Precalculus Exam in 2005.
