Where can I apply for a low-cost or free health plan for myself and/or my family? |
|
Calling to schedule an appointment or inquire about services:
Hello, my name is __________ and I would like to schedule an appointment for ___________ (example, counseling or psychiatry services) or obtain information on the services available.
My health plan is ________ (example: LA Care Medi-Cal or Anthem Blue Cross) or I don’t have health insurance currently, do you have any lower cost or sliding scale fee options. Once you get a live staff on the line and share why you are calling, generally any other questions the live clinic staff has for you will be asked to you directly and the conversation will be guided as such.
If you are not ready to schedule an appointment, you can call to request more information and some providers will allow you to re free consultation (about 10 - 15 minutes) prior to scheduling an appointment to allow you to better determine if the two of you may work well together to meet your needs in which you may ask for during your initial phone call.
You can share your preferences such as a counselor that has experience in grief support and depression. Each clinic you contact will vary in how they may schedule your appointment.
You generally will be asked for further information like your full name, date of birth, the plan subscriber name (this will sometimes be you’re the person who you receive your insurance from such as a guardian or spouse), and your health plan information. At times your first conversation with a mental healthcare provider may be just to obtain your contact information, in which a scheduler will contact you later to schedule an appointment after they have verified your health plan information and coverage.
You may be asked for information like why you are seeking services i.e.. school stress, anxiety, etc. You may also share with the intake staff any provider preferences you may have like male or female that has experience with bipolar disorder or is LGBT allied etc. Generally, the goal of these type of questions of get a better understanding of what therapist may work best with you and to ensure that the clinic you have contacted can meet your needs.
Please do due diligence to avoid receiving any uncovered health and behavioral health care services or surprise billing, you are strongly encouraged to contact your health plan and potential provider to verify that your plan is accepted, services/treatment is/are covered and/or urged to find out ahead of your appointment your good faith estimate for services.
If the provider isn’t available, you can leave a voicemail stating your name, the reason why you are calling, your health plan name, and a good contact number that you can be reached at, it can be helpful to state your contact number 2 times to ensure that it is retrieved accurately.
After scheduling an appointment and meeting with your provider, you may find that the provider is not a good fit for your needs, you can switch providers, you do not have remain with that provider once you have selected a provider.
*For Medi-Cal plan members, often you will find that the PCP (primary care Physician) or clinic name listed on your plan ID card provides behavioral health services or is able to provide you with a referral for behavioral health services.
Please do due diligence to avoid receiving any uncovered behavioral health care by contacting your health plan (phone number usually located on the back of your health plan/insurance card) and potential provider to verify that your plan is accepted, and services/treatment is/are covered
Cal State University Los Angeles and our Counseling and Psychological Services office hope this information will assist you in identifying mental health support. Please be advised that the resources we have listed are not affiliated with the college.
