U-Pass Program - Spring 2023

The Metro U-Pass is a reduced-fare transit pass, offering college students unlimited rides on any Metro system in LA County that accepts TAP, including all Metro bus and rail, all Foothill Transit local buses county-wide including the Foothill Silver Streak (at all departing stations), City of Commerce Transit, Culver City Bus, Gardena Transit, LA DASH, Torrance Transit, Long Beach Transit, Montebello Bus Lines, Norwalk Transit, Pasadena Transit and Santa Monica’s Big Blue Bus

How much does the U-Pass cost?

The spring 2023 Metro U-Pass is $121.50 and is valid from January 22, 2023, to May 28, 2023, for a total of 18 weeks. The U-Pass is subsidized by Metro, Student Union, Cal State LA Parking & Transportation Services, and the Student Success Fee.

Please note the following:

  • All Metro U-Pass sales are final – No Refunds.
  • Commuter Services is not responsible for lost or stolen U-Pass TAP cards.
  • This program is offered only to currently enrolled Cal State LA students
  • Students cannot possess a Cal State LA semester parking permit and an active U-Pass concurrently
  • Students must meet the eligibility requirements at the time of purchase
  • Students must have a Cal State LA ID when purchasing and/or retrieving a U-Pass
  • U-Passes will continue to be sold at a prorated rate throughout the semester (see sales schedule below)
  • Metro U-Pass is not valid on Metrolink trains

IMPORTANT - U-Pass purchases will only be available online.

Renew U-Pass (for students who previously purchased a U-Pass card)

  • Renew U-Pass (for students who previously purchased a U-Pass card)
  • Purchase your Fall U-Pass online beginning January 9, 2023, through your Parking Portal via MyCalStateLA or at calstatela.aimsparking.com
  • Your U-Pass will automatically reload effective January 23, 2023. PLEASE NOTE - All U-Pass renewals that are purchased by 12 pm on Friday, January 27, 2023, will be activated and effective January 30, 2023, if all eligibility requirements are met.
  • For all Spring U-Pass online purchases after January 20, 2023, your U-Pass will be loaded and ready to use after it has been activated by Metro within 2-3 business days after initial purchase.
  • If you lost your U-Pass, you must pay the replacement fee before receiving clearance to purchase a new pass. Please contact CommuterServices@calstatela.edu for further information and how to report your lost U-Pass.
  • If you have previously reported a U-Pass lost and were issued a replacement U-Pass by Commuter Services, the lost pass reported cannot be activated by Metro. Please make sure you discard the old pass if it has been found.

First-Time U-Pass Purchasers

  • YOU MUST complete the online Metro Survey (this is mandatory for first-time participation in the program)
  • You will then receive an email from [email protected] with instructions on purchasing your U-Pass
  • All purchases must be completed online
  • After purchase, you may pick up your U-Pass in-person at the Department of Public Safety, located in Lot 1. Dates and hours to pick U-Pass in person are Monday thru Friday 9 am to 4 pm.
  • You must have Cal State LA ID when purchasing and/or retrieving your U-Pass

Your U-Pass will be loaded and ready to use after it has been activated by Metro within 2 business days after initial purchase.

U-Pass is not valid on Metrolink. U-Pass is valid on all local Metro bus and rail, as well as Foothill Silver Streak (between El Monte and Union Station only), Culver City Bus, GTrans, LA DASH, Torrance Transit, Long Beach Transit, Montebello Bus Lines, Norwalk Transit, Pasadena Transit, and Big Blue Bus.

Due to our partnerships that bring you such a reduced rate, U-Pass sales are final and there can be no refunds.

Yes, you need to bring your Cal State LA student ID. If you do not bring your campus ID we cannot sell you a U-Pass.

Tap your U-Pass once before you board or upon boarding. Your pass will be activated after the first tap.

Contact Commuter Services via email. There is a $25.00 fee to replace the first lost U-Pass. You will be charged the prorated face value for all additional lost U-Passes.
