What's my first math class?

Choose your major to find your first math class by math placement category.

  • Math Placement Category I (GE B4 requirement completed)
    You have met the GE B4 requirement.  Your first math course should be MATH 1040 (Precalculus) unless you placed into a higher level course because of an AP exam score or ALEKS placement. After MATH 1040, your next math course is MATH 2110 (Calculus I).
  • Math Placement Category II (Support course not needed with GE B4 course)
    Your first math course should be MATH 1040 (Precalculus) unless you placed into a higher level course because of an AP exam score or ALEKS placement. After MATH 1040, your next math course is MATH 2110 (Calculus I).
  • Math Placement Category III (Support course needed with GE B4 course)
    You are encouraged to take ESM 1082 in the Early Start Program in the summer. This course is equivalent to MATH 1082 (Precalculus: Functions). After ESM 1082, your next math class is MATH 1083 (Precalculus: Trigonometry). If you don't take ESM 1082, then you should take MATH 1082 (Precalculus: Functions) in the fall.
  • Math Placement Category IV (Early Start Math required, and support course needed with GE B4 course)
    You should take ESM 1082 in the Early Start Program in the summer. This course is equivalent to MATH 1082 (Precalculus: Functions).  After ESM 1082, your next math class is MATH 1083 (Precalculus: Trigonometry).
  • Math Placement Category I (GE B4 requirement completed)

  • Math Placement Category I (GE B4 requirement completed)

  • Math Placement Category II (Support course not needed with GE B4 course)
    To meet your GE B4 requirement, take one of the following courses:
    • Statistics Path: EDFN 1092 or MATH 1092
    • STEM Path: MATH 1081 or MATH 1040
    • Non Statistics/Non STEM Path: MATH 1002 or PHIL 1080
  • Math Placement Category III (Support course needed with GE B4 course)
    You can choose to take an Early Start MATH class in the summer, either Statistics path: ESM 1090 or STEM path: ESM 1082. If you do not take an Early Start MATH class in the summer, then you should take one of these GE B4 courses in the fall:
    • Statistics Path: EDFN 1090 or MATH 1090
    • STEM Path: MATH 1082
    • Non Statistics/Non STEM Path: MATH 1000 or PHIL 1081
  • Math Placement Category IV (Early Start Math required, and support course needed with GE B4 course)
    You should take an Early Start MATH class in the summer, either Statistics path: ESM 1090 or STEM path: ESM 1082. If you are unable to take ESM 1090 or ESM 1082, you should take one of these GE B4 courses in the fall:

  • Math Placement Category I (GE B4 requirement completed)
    You have met the GE B4 requirement. Your first MATH course should be MATH 1100. After MATH 1100, you should take MATH 1150. Note that MATH 1100 does not meet the GE B4 requirement, but MATH 1150 does.
  • Math Placement Category II (Support course not needed with GE B4 course)
    Your first MATH course should be MATH 1100. You may choose to also enroll in the support course, MATH 1101 at the same time. After MATH 1100, you should take MATH 1150. Note that MATH 1100 does not meet the GE B4 requirement, but MATH 1150 does.
  • Math Placement Category III (Support course needed with GE B4 course)
    You should take MATH 1100 and MATH 1101. After MATH 1100, you should take MATH 1150. Note that MATH 1100 does not meet the GE B4 requirement, but MATH 1150 does.
  • Math Placement Category IV (Early Start Math required, and support course needed with GE B4 course)
    In the fall, you should take MATH 1100 and MATH 1101. After MATH 1100, you should take MATH 1150. Note that MATH 1100 does not meet the GE B4 requirement, but MATH 1150 does.
  • Math Placement Category I (GE B4 requirement completed)
    You have met the GE B4 requirement. Your major does not have any additional math requirements.
  • Math Placement Category II (Support course not needed with GE B4 course)
    You should take any one of the following courses: MATH 1002, MATH 1092, EDFN 1092 or PHIL 1080. You may choose instead to take the supported versions of these courses: MATH 1000, MATH 1090, EDFN 1090 or PHIL 1081.
  • Math Placement Category III (Support course needed with GE B4 course)
    You are encouraged to take ESM 1090 in the Early Start Program in the summer. This course is equivalent to EDFN 1090. If you don't take ESM 1090, then you should take MATH 1000, MATH 1090, EDFN 1090 or PHIL 1081 in the fall.

You may choose instead to take the supported versions of these courses: MATH 1000, MATH 1090, EDFN 1090 or PHIL 1081.
