Area 6: Ethnic Studies

CSU General Education Requirement – Area 6 Ethnic Studies

Units Requirement:

  • 3 semester units (4 quarter units)
  • This lower-division or upper-division, 3 semester (4 quarter) unit requirement fulfills Education Code Section 89032.
  • The requirement to take a 3 semester (4 quarter) unit course in Area 6 shall not be waived or substituted.

Subject Matter Elements

Proposal clearly demonstrates that the course addresses:

  • The course has a designated prefix in one of the following: African American Studies, Asian American Studies, Latina/o American Studies, or Native American Studies.
  • Courses with similar prefixes (e.g., Pan-African Studies, American Indian Studies, Chicana/o Studies, Ethnic Studies) may also meet this requirement.
  • Courses without ethnic studies prefixes may meet this requirement if cross-listed with a course that has an ethnic studies prefix.
  • The course meets at least three of the five core competencies outlined below.

Area or GE Requirement Student Learning Outcomes

Proposal clearly demonstrates that student learning outcomes are being taught and assessed sufficiently:

  • Critical Analysis of Race and Racism:
    • Analyze and articulate concepts such as race and racism, racialization, ethnicity, equity, ethnocentrism, eurocentrism, white supremacy, self-determination, liberation, decolonization, sovereignty, imperialism, settler colonialism, and anti-racism within the disciplines of Native American Studies, African American Studies, Asian American Studies, and Latina/o American Studies.
  • Application of Theory and Knowledge:
    • Apply theory and knowledge produced by Native American, African American, Asian American, and/or Latina/o American communities to describe critical events, histories, cultures, intellectual traditions, contributions, lived experiences, and social struggles of these groups, with particular emphasis on agency and group affirmation.
  • Intersectionality and Social Identity Analysis:
    • Critically analyze the intersection of race and racism in relation to class, gender, sexuality, religion, spirituality, national origin, immigration status, ability, tribal citizenship, sovereignty, language, and/or age within Native American, African American, Asian American, and/or Latina/o American communities.
  • Struggle, Resistance, and Social Justice:
    • Critically review how struggle, resistance, racial and social justice, solidarity, and liberation, as experienced and enacted by Native Americans, African Americans, Asian Americans, and/or Latina/o Americans, relate to contemporary structural issues, such as communal, national, international, and transnational politics in areas such as immigration, reparations, settler colonialism, multiculturalism, and language policies.
  • Engagement in Anti-Racist and Anti-Colonial Practices:
    • Describe and actively engage with anti-racist and anti-colonial issues, practices, and movements within Native American, African American, Asian American, and/or Latina/o American communities to promote a just and equitable society.

Implementation and Assessment

Proposal or supplemental materials provide evidence of:

  • Specific training, currency, and/or experience in the basic intellectual and pedagogic competencies in the specific or designated subject area.
  • Upper-division ethnic studies courses may satisfy the lower-division Area 6 requirement, provided that an adequate number of lower-division course options remain available to students.
  • Ethnic studies courses required in majors, minors, or other campus-wide requirements that are approved for GE Area 6 credit shall also fulfill (double count for) this requirement.
