What is an HSI?
To qualify as a Hispanic-Serving Institution, or HSI, an educational institution must serve a population comprised of 25% or more Latino students and must be designated as an eligible institution under Title III and Title V of the Higher Education Act of 1965. Of the 23 campuses that make up the California State University system, 21 are HSIs, including Cal State LA.
As an HSI, our role goes beyond the federal definition. Our University community does more than simply enroll a high percentage of Latinx students. We are committed to providing academic programs, extracurricular experiences, events, and student services that celebrate their diverse cultural wealth, cultivate a sense of sociocultural validation and belonging, and are tailored to their needs.

Chicanx Latinx Student Resource Center
The Chicanx Latinx Student Resource Center provides services, support, events, and programs for students who identify as part of, or are interested in, the Chicanx and/or Latinx community and culture.
HSI Grants
In the last five years, Cal State LA has received more than $26.3 million in grants supporting the University's activities and initiatives as an HSI.
HACU and AAHHE
Since 1989, Cal State LA has been a proud member of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities. The University is also a member of American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education.

Legacy of Chicano Studies
Department of Chicana/o and Latina/o Studies
Cal State LA is home to the first Chicano Studies program in the nation, established at the University more than five decades ago. Now the Department of Chicana/o and Latina/o Studies is housed in the College of Ethnic Studies.

The Chicanx Latinx University Association is an organization that serves and represents Chicanx and Latinx faculty and staff at Cal State LA.
Alumni
Chicanx and Latinx University Alumni Network
The Chicanx and Latinx University Alumni Network cultivates and supports an inclusive community of alumni. In collaboration with students, faculty, and staff, CLUAN offers mentoring programs, services, network opportunities, and financial initiatives that facilitate professional, social, and academic growth among the Chicanx/Latinx community. CLUAN was established in 2021 with support from the Chicanx Latinx University Association.
