Poster Presentation Guidelines
for NSS College-wide Faculty Retreat
May 11, 2018
The goal of each talk is to be visually interesting, fast-paced, and fun, while acquainting everyone with interesting current research in NSS. Each presenter will give an overview of his/her research or discuss one key point (topical, methodological, or theoretical) in 5 minutes. Presenters should think in terms of creating a verbal narrative (spoken) and visual narrative (cool colorful slides) that work together as a piece.
LIGHTNING/IGNITE PRESENTATION FORMAT:
Each presenter creates a 20 slide pack with the first slide being a title/author slide and the last slide being a “The End”/“Finis” slide. Before the day of the retreat, all of the slides will be compiled into one single slide show, where each slide will play for exactly 15 seconds and automatically advance. Presenters begin when their title/author slide starts and end when their “The End”/ “Finis” slide hits the screen. In other words, time will be strictly kept by the actual slides themselves. Presenters will be lined up at two alternating microphones, and will begin speaking as soon as his/her slides begin. There is no lag or pause between talks.
Tip #1: If you would like a slide to play for more than 15 seconds then use duplicates of the same slide, 2x15 second=30 seconds, 3x15 seconds=45 seconds. However, slides lasting more than 30 seconds can be slow.
Tip #2: This is not the time for lots of text on slides, nor for a ramble through lecture slides.
Email your 20 slides to [email protected].
If you would like to know more about the origins of this fast paced, fun to watch presentation mode, or would like to see some examples, see: http://www.ignitetalks.io and https://barriebyron.wordpress.com/2013/02/17/so-you-want-to-give-a-lightning-talk/
POSTER PRESENTATION:
Poster format is up to you and what you are comfortable with. Posters should be considered a snapshot of your work intended to engage colleagues in a dialog about the work. Titles have to be large enough to be read from 10-15 feet. Presentation should be no longer than 5 minutes.
