Dr. Gauthier’s research interests include examining the causes and effects of hate crimes and other bias-related incidents. Her current research focuses on the macro-level factors, including the election of President Obama, associated with the number of hate groups in U.S. states. She is also working on a project exploring the incidence and effects of hate crimes among transgender individuals. She has also volunteered with the Los Angeles County Commission on Human Relations on their annual Hate Crime Report. Before coming to CSULA, Dr. Gauthier was faculty at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where she published research on gender differences in the job satisfaction of police officers and the effects of acculturation on substance use among Hispanics.
Dr. Gauthier is also the Criminal Justice Graduate Program Director and a co-advisor for the Criminal Justice Student Association and Alpha Phi Sigma Mu Tau Chapter, the Criminal Justice National Honor Society.
