The Department of Asian and Asian American Studies offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in Asian and Asian American Studies. The program examines Asian and Asian American communities within the context of history, culture, politics, racial formation, and social justice. Students learn to analyze the intersections of race and ethnicity, gender, class, and power within local, national, and global contexts. The program emphasizes critical inquiry, analysis, and action so students can create positive change in themselves and the world around them.
The total number of units required for the undergraduate degree is 120 units, of which 39 units are in the major.
Required Core (21 units/7 courses). All AAAS majors are required to take the following core courses or their equivalent:
- AAAS 2000: Pacific Asian Culture, People, and Society (GE)
- AAAS 2100: Introduction to Asian American Studies (GE)
- AAAS 2400: Asian American and Pacific Islander Social Movements (GE)
- AAAS 3000: Methods of Research and Writing (GE)
- AAAS 3480: Race, Class, and Gender (GE)
- AAAS 4970: Asian American Leadership
- AAAS 4990: Senior Capstone
Elective Option (18 units/6 classes)
- 15 units/5 courses lower-division or upper-division AAAS courses; at least 9 units/3 courses must be upper-division
- 3 units/1 UD GE course from another CoES department (AIIS, CLS, PAS)
