MS-HCM Grad Student Team Places Third at HCE College Bowl at CSUN, 4/25/14

CSULA placed third and won a $500 prize in the 2014 College Bowl case study competition of teams from 6 Southern California Universities at CSU Northridge on April 25, 2014. The other schools were UCLA, USC, CSU Northridge, CSU Long Beach and Loma Linda University.  Prof. Barrington (Barry) Hunt (Management Department) recruited and coached these four graduate students in CSULA’s Master of Healthcare Management Program.  Profs Andre Avramchuk and Stephen McGuire (Management) also supported and cheered on the team.

This was part of the Healthcare Executives (HCE) Annual College Bowl with a panel of judges who are hospital administrators from the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE). The CSULA team made an insightful proposal for creating a vertically integrated medical city / healthcare community on the site of the former March Air Base to meet the health needs of the large, underserved population of Riverside County. The team also enjoyed meeting several industry leaders and the MS-HCM Program Directors and students from the other campuses.

CSULA team members met with Steve Tomassi, the CEO of March Healthcare, the focus of the case study. His keynote address compared the financial and operational strengths and weaknesses of many regional hospitals as they cope in this dynamic industry.   (See team photos below.)
