Student Hand Raise in Navigate

Student Hand Raise, also called Self Alert allows students to “raise their hand” by issuing alerts on themselves, using the Navigate Student app on desktop or mobile. This functionality is available to partner institutions that have a Smart Guidance or Core partnership where students log into Navigate through a Navigate URL. Your institution can configure the Hand Raise name and determine which Alert Reasons should be connected to students raising their hand. As with other Alert Reasons, each reason that can be issued by a student can send an automated email to the student, open a case, have a case auto assigned to an individual staff member or assigned relationship, send a case closed email, and be affiliated with a Care Unit.

Student Hand Raise is available once both the Strategic Care 23.1.0 release and Smart Guidance 23.1.0 releases are available to your institution, which is tentatively scheduled to be completed by January 26th, 2023. After following the steps below to configure Hand Raise in Strategic Care, please reach out to [email protected] to turn the feature on in Navigate Student and allow students to issue Hand Raise alerts. If Hand Raise is enabled in Navigate Student without first making updates in Strategic Care, students will see Hand Raise functionality but not be able to successfully submit a Hand Raise alert.

These release notes cover the portion of Hand Raise functionality in Navigate Staff (Strategic Care). Refer to the Smart Guidance 23.1.0 release notes for information about configuring Hand Raise in the Content Administration Tool as well as how students use the feature.

Configuring Labels and Alert Reasons in Navigate Staff for Hand Raise

For students to use the Hand Raise feature in Navigate Student, administrators must first create Alert Reasons in Navigate Staff that will appear to the students.

To do this, start by opening the Alert Reasons page and Add a New Alert Reason.

Alert Reason settings card. the setting for, "Show This Alert Reason to Students when creating Self Alert" is highlighted.

If you want an Alert Reason to show to students, check the Show This Alert Reason to Students when creating Self Alert as well as Alert Reason is Active and Show This Alert Reason to the Issuer when issuing Alert.

Note.Navigate strongly recommends reviewing the intervention pathways and automated email settings of student self alert reasons before making them available to students. Students will be the issuer of these alerts, so they will receive the case closed emails if the alert triggers a case opening.

After creating your student Alert Reasons, you need to edit the Student role permissions. Open the Edit Role page for the student user role you want to have access to Hand Raise in Navigate Student. Go to the Care Unit Permissions & Data Access drawer (for Alert Reasons tied to a Care Unit) and/or the Non-Care Unit Permissions & Data Access drawer (for Alert Reasons not tied to a Care Unit).

To let students issue self alerts for reasons tied to a Care Unit, select Students Can Create and View Self Alerts for the Care Unit in the Alert Management section.

Alert Management Settings. "Create Alerts" and "Student Can Create and View Self Alerts" are activated.

To let students issue self-alerts for Alert Reasons not tied to a Care Unit, select Issue and View Self Alerts for Non-Care Unit Specific Alert Reasons in the Non-Care Unit Permissions & Data Access Drawer in the Student Permissions section.

Student Permissions Setting, The settings for; "Issue and View Self Alerts for Non-Care Unit Specific Reasons", and "View success team", are activated

The final, optional configuration for Student Self Alerts on the Navigate Staff side is setting the Self Alert Label across Navigate. This is in Global Configuration. Updating this field will also update the label for students.

Global configuration settings, the settings for; "Self Alert Label Across Application" is highlighted.
