EOP Mission Statement

The Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) serves as a primary vehicle for the CSU in increasing the access and academic success/ retention of California’s educationally and economically disadvantaged students, thus working in the spirit and abiding by the legislative intent originally established the program in 1969.

THE CORE ELEMENTS OF EOP ARE TO:

  1. Provide ACCESS opportunities for educationally and economically disadvantaged students by making higher education a possibility for prospective students with potential for academic success.
  1. Provide EOP GRANTS to eligible students, who should also receive the highest priority for financial aid resources available to the institution.
  1. Provide a TRANSITIONAL experience that will empower students to better manage and navigate the college experience.
  1. Provide SUPPORT SERVICES to facilitate student success.
  1. Provide ADVOCACY to address the unique needs of EOP students.

EOP GUIDING PRINCIPLE:

  1. Disadvantaged students should have the opportunity to attend higher education.
  2. Potential is not measured by GPA or standardized testing alone. We are empowered to allow admitting those who we believe demonstrate potential.
  3. We believe in all forms of diversity.
  4. Recognizing the changing diversity of the state.
  5. We believe all students can be successful if given the opportunity.
  6. We do not subscribe to exclusionary policies and practices that prevent social mobility.
  7. We have a moral and political obligation to not neglect the most under-prepared and under-represented in our communities.
  8. We believe in being accountable to the communities we serve.
  9. We believe in financial accountability.
  10.  We believe in prudent use of resources.
  11.  We believe that providing access to higher education will impact personal student success.
  12.  I think anyone who wants to pursue higher education should be given the opportunity.
  13.  We believe in multiple indicators of student access.
  14.  At its conception these populations were identified as low family income, which are often members of ethnic minorities.

    a. American Indian

    b. African American male/ female

    c. Chicano male/ female

    d. Asian/ Pacific Islander

  15. We believe that EOP is first and foremost an educational pipeline for its original population of ethnic minorities and should continue serving these populations as a priority while also responding to the growing diversity in the state of California.
