Voices of LA
In 2016, the Pat Brown Institute launched a multiyear survey program with university, foundation, and individual donor support to explore the social and political orientations of four major racial/ethnic groups in Los Angeles County: African Americans, Latinos, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, and Jews.
Building on the success of this initial program, PBI partnered with the California Community Foundation to expand the survey program to further elevate the voices of residents from working-class, place-based communities of color. This ongoing initiative seeks to amplify the experiences and perspectives of these communities, helping to inform policies and programs that better serve their needs.
In addition to these racial and ethnic surveys, PBI collaborates with community partners to conduct various other surveys to better understand the Los Angeles landscape. Examples include surveys focused on COVID-19 recovery efforts to assessing the current state of the LA County nonprofit sector. Through these ongoing efforts, the Institute strives to provide valuable insights into the diverse needs and challenges faced by different communities in Los Angeles, ultimately working to foster a more equitable and inclusive region.
Surveys
The poll was conducted in collaboration with Advancing Justice – LA. The survey reveals major differences between younger and older Asian-American voters on social issues and partisanship.
The PBI Latino Poll findings provide key insights into Latino voters on issues such as public infrastructure spending, immigration policy, and partisan identification. Of approximately 5.1 million voters in Los Angeles County, an estimated 32% are Latinos.
The survey includes 1,148 African-American voters within the City of Los Angeles and 1,211 African Americans outside the City but within Los Angeles County.
The Jewish poll illustrates how Jewish voters civically engage, their political priorities, and what they consider to be the key issues facing Los Angeles.
