In Memoriam

We are saddened to announce that Cal State LA Distinguished Alumnus Dr. Ronald R. Bates, PhD, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, September 6, 2022. Dr. Bates served the public for more than 50 years and acted as city manager for the cities of Buena Park, South Gate, La Habra Heights, and Pico Rivera. He also served on the Los Alamitos City Council and was president of the League of California Cities and the Southern California Association of Governments.

Dr. Bates completed his undergraduate work at Cal State LA in Government and Physics. He received his MPA and PhD from the University of Southern California in Public Administration and completed his Certified Financial Planning (CFP) credential in 1988. He also served on the College of Natural and Social Sciences Dean's Board of Advisors at Cal State LA.

In 2014, Dr. Bates received a National Public Service Award from the American Society of Public Administrators and the National Academy of Public Administration. The award recognizes government leaders who have made outstanding and lasting contributions to public service.

Dr. Bates was 76 years of age and is survived by his wife, Marilyn, two daughters, and two grandchildren.
