2018 Honors Convocation

April 24, 2018

On Friday, April 20th, the College of Natural and Social Sciences celebrated honorees on the Dean’s List with Distinction. Students invited to the ceremony earned a grade point average of 3.9 or higher in 12 or more units of graded coursework in one semester. Special guest speaker, Nelson Algaze, Principal in Charge & CEO of Shlemmer Algaze and Associates (SAA), and Cal State LA NSS alum, spoke about his own experiences as a student and related his obstacles to those in the audience. His advice to the students was to “enjoy the process and not the results” as the key to “winning” or achieving their goals.

This year also saw an unprecedented number of students named to the Dean’s List. The list was comprised of undergraduates who earned a grade point average of 3.5 or higher in 12 or more units of graded coursework in one semester. The Natural and Social Sciences Outstanding Graduate Student Awards were awarded to Athena Mae Mepa Madrid and Cinthia Marlene Campos for Natural and Social Science respectively.

In her remarks, the dean of the college, Dr. Pamela Scott-Johnson, commended the students on their hard work and implored them to continue on this path of success. In alignment with the University’s motto, she encouraged them keep “pushing boundaries” with their scholarly work and careers, and to be an agent of change in transforming Greater Los Angeles.

While the Honors Convocation ceremony honored students on the Dean’s List with Distinction, the NSS Dean’s List celebration which honors all on the Dean’s List is slated for May 4th from 12:30PM to 2:00PM at the La Kretz Hall Lobby.
