Fall 2026 Ballmer Trainings
The MSW Ballmer Project will be hosting two hands-on workshops to build skills in recognizing risk, responding to crisis, and supporting children, young adults, and their families. These events will be open to all MSW & SBFC students in all cohorts. If space permits, BASW students may be permitted to attend.

Learn how to recognize and respond to psychiatric emergencies in social work practice - including suicide and homicide risk assessment, warning signs, risk and protective factors, crisis de-escalation, grave disability, and the legal considerations behind involuntary psychiatric holds - and how to engage and support families during a mental health crisis involving ages 18+.
You will practice:
- Recognizing and responding to warning signs
- Assessing risk and protective factors
- De-escalation techniques for crises
- Understanding the legal implications of involuntary holds and supporting young adults and their families

Social workers play a critical role in suicide prevention across schools, hospitals, and mental health agencies. This hands-on workshop offers psychoeducation on self-harm and suicide, introduces objective, non-stigmatizing language, and builds the skills to identify warning signs, ask direct questions, determine risk level, and connect child and adolescent clients (under 18 years old) and their families with resources.
You will practice:
- Exploring your own beliefs about mortality and self-harm; deconstructing myths
- Using non-stigmatizing language
- Identifying warning signs and symptoms that call for further assessment
- Asking directly about ideation, plans, access to means, and intent
- Determining risk level (No Known, Low, Moderate, High) and next steps
