Program Description

Professional and college sports are much more than vehicles for entertainment in our society. They are also billion-dollar businesses. Currently, the influence of sports organizations creates paradigm shifts in critical dialogues about issues such as crime and punishment, free speech, racism, and social justice and have a significant economic impact. A crisis can severely damage the reputation and credibility of any sports organization or individual athlete. The Certificate in Sports Crisis Communication and Public Relations program focuses on methods for managing the negative impact of an ongoing sports crisis and repairing the damage done. Participants will learn the basic principles of, and skills for, handling ongoing public relations crises for individual athletes or organizations as a whole with an emphasis on the best writing and communication practices for sports public and media relations.

Program Objectives

This program is designed to enhance students’ writing, video, audio, and digital platforms communication skills. It will teach fundamental steps for identifying and handling crises for a sports organization, the basics of implementing successful sports crisis public relations campaigns.
