Women's History Month was previously a week-long event in Sonoma, California. Women’s History Month became an official annual celebration when Congress signed the resolution in 1987. It was originally established to draw attention to and improve the focus on women in historical studies. International Women’s Day (March 8) also falls during this month.
Consult the Library Resource Guide on Women’s History Month for additional information.
All events are open to anyone, regardless of race, color, national origin, and sex.

Visit the University Library from March 1st – 31st to see our Women’s History Month book display on the 2nd floor Reading Lounge. Women's History Month was previously a week-long event in Sonoma, California to recognize women’s societal contributions. It became an official month-long annual celebration when Congress signed the resolution in 1987. While the original focus was to draw attention to the impact of women in historical studies, it now includes a greater call to celebrate women’s achievements, recognize gender inequity in society, foster solidarity among people of all genders, and mobilize towards a more equitable world for women. International Women’s Day (IWD), celebrated annually on March 8, honors the achievements of women across all aspects of life - social, economic, cultural, and political - while also advocating for gender equality.

Carolyn Weathers will be sharing stories from her many years of queer activism. Weathers was one of the Gay Liberation Front leaders who orchestrated the Biltmore Invasion, disrupting the APA conference's screening of a documentary depicting the use of electroshock as a "cure" for homosexuality; this direct action led to the declassification of homosexuality as a mental illness. She was also one of the first out lesbians to appear on television, in 1970 on the Regis Philbin show. Weathers authored three books, co-founded Clothespin Fever Press to publish works by more lesbian and sapphic writers, worked as a librarian, established her own archive of self-donated materials at the ONE Archives, and participated in numerous speaking engagements and exhibits.
