Chicanx Latinx Heritage Month September 15 - October 15 2023

The Chicanx Latinx Heritage Month celebrates the contributions of Latinx Americans and the richness of the cultural history of those with ancestries typically from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. The period encompasses the dates on which several countries in the South and central America celebrate their respective Independence days.

Channel your inner abuelitx as we learn a craft that many Latine folks have been surrounded by or have created themselves. Bring an open heart, patience, and love to learn more from this wonderful duo. Feel free to bring your own supplies if you are proficient in embroidery and would simply like a space on campus to take a break and stitch! Space is limited please RSVP.

Held across three days, the Sounds of the Underground: LA Music Scenes from the 1960s-2000s at the Cal State LA University Library brings together Los Angeles-based scholars, cultural workers, and music creatives to unpack the underground sounds and deep cuts of LA’s diverse popular music soundscapes.  

Spanning the 1960s to present-day, this event series kicks off with an author talk with Dr. Richard T. Rodríguez, Professor of English at the University of California, Riverside discussing his new book, A Kiss across the Ocean: Transatlantic Intimacies of British Post-Punk and US Latinidad.

Dr. Garcia returns to Cal State LA to lay out a framework for advancing equity and justice, including nine organizational dimensions and offering examples from her research that centers on issues of equity and justice in higher education.

OCTOBER

Tap into your inner abuelitx as we learn some of the basics of crocheting. While crochet has European origins, tejando has rooted itself in Latine cultures, proving to be a beautiful form of art and expression. Let’s call on our elders and ancestors to convivir and learn together. Feel free to BYOY (bring your own yarn) if you are proficient in crochet and would like to simply have a space on campus to take a break and enjoy your craft!

Cal State LA honors Indigenous Peoples Day! Join us to celebrate shared history and culture.

In this concert, alongside other pieces centered around Love and Dream, we have specifically selected these three compositions to honor Latinx Heritage Month. The Concert Choir will perform an arrangement of the highly popular Venezuelan song 'Alma Llanera' by Pedro Elías Gutiérres (1870-1954). Our Chamber Singers will present the exquisite 'Soneto de la Noche,' composed by Morten Lauridsen, which beautifully sets Pablo Neruda's stunning love poem to music. The concert will conclude with a lively arrangement by Puerto Rican composer Suzzette Ortis, 'El Cumbanchero.

This event is an opportunity to meet and ask questions of mental health counselors, make your own Latinx-inspired positive affirmation bead bracelet, and win prizes! Connect with compassionate counselors from the Counseling and Psychological Services Office (CAPS) to learn about the variety of confidential services we offer, including individual counseling as well as upcoming support groups and Let’s Talk spaces. Express your individuality by crafting your very own bead bracelet adorned with positive affirmations inspired by Latinx culture. We hope that this tangible reminder of strength and resilience will serve as a personal source of encouragement. Finally, answer a CAPS trivia question to spin our prize wheel! Don’t worry if you’re unsure about the answers – this is also an educational opportunity to learn alongside your peers. Let’s come together to honor Latinx culture, prioritize mental wellness, and strengthen our community bonds. We look forward to seeing you there!

In honor of Chicanx Latinx Heritage Month and the legacy of Dolores Huerta (co-founder of the United Farm Workers and civil rights feminist Chicana leader), please join us for a screening of the documentary film, DOLORES - presenting the life struggles and accomplishments of Dolores Huerta, a Chicana activist and leader who has committed her life to service for social justice. Prior to the film screening Dolores will appear via live video feed for a Q&A with the audience. This event is co-sponsored by the Department of Women's Gender and Sexuality Studies (WGSS), the WGSS Student Club, the Department of Chicana/o Latina/o Studies (CLS), the Center for the Study of Genders and Sexualities (CSGS), and the Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.

The film will be open captioned and there will be ASL interpretation for the Q&A with Dolores Huerta.
