The College of Business and Economics is pleased to welcome Interim Dean Dr. Priscilla Romkema, who joins us during a season of transition following the retirement of Dean Dr. Tye Jackson this past July. As we begin a new academic year, we are excited about the opportunity to work alongside her and continue building on the college’s momentum.
Dr. Romkema brings with her a wealth of experience in higher education leadership. She previously served as Dean of the College of Business and Natural Sciences at Black Hills State University (BHSU) in Spearfish, South Dakota, a role she held for 10 years. Before stepping into administration, she began her career as a faculty member in the College of Business and Technology. Never one to shy away from a challenge, she pursued leadership opportunities with the intention of sparking positive change and boosting morale. During her tenure as Dean, she successfully worked alongside faculty and staff to guide her college through initial AACSB accreditation.
Reflecting on that journey, Dr. Romkema shared that the experience was both rewarding and formative:
“Serving at Black Hills State University during the pursuit and successful achievement of initial AACSB accreditation was a truly rewarding journey—marked by shared commitment, collaboration, and collective success. It was during this time that I came to fully appreciate the power of working with a focused and capable team, united by a common goal: delivering high-quality education.”
Born into a family of educators, Dr. Romkema grew up surrounded by the influence of learning and the endless possibilities that education provides. She describes herself as a lifelong student at heart, grateful for the mentors and teachers who guided her and opened doors throughout her formative years. These experiences shaped her belief in the transformative power of education; a belief she has carried into every role she has taken on.
After, 20 years in higher education, including 10 years serving as a dean, Dr. Romkema stepped into the role as President of the Monument Health Foundation (formerly, Regional Health). In this philanthropic position, she leaned on transferable skills, listening sessions and team building to better understand operations and meet the needs of others. She credits this time as further preparation for her continued work in higher education, serving as Provost at BHSU.
Now at Cal State LA, Dr. Romkema sees her experience directly relevant to her role with the College of Business and Economics. “This background has equipped me with hands-on experience, strategic insight, and practical know-how. I look forward to applying these lessons in a way that supports our shared, ongoing commitment to academic excellence and continuous improvement,” she explained.
As Interim Dean, her priorities are centered on fostering a strong and thriving community within CBE:
- Foster and strengthen a culture committed to aspiration and academic excellence
- Elevate and celebrate accomplishments, achievements, and impact
- Amplify the importance and impact of external validations, including accreditation, rankings, awards, and competitions
When Dr. Romkema isn’t leading in the classroom or office, she can often be found on the track. An avid runner, she logs 4–5 miles nearly every day of the week and has impressively finished the Boston Marathon seven times. For Dr. Romkema, running is more than just exercise, “it’s a chance to clear her mind and think through opportunities and challenges”. Beyond athletics, she is also a lifelong music lover. A piano player since the age of seven, she continues to nurture her passion for the arts, playing at weddings, special services and occasions, as well as for soloists and instrumentalists.
We are excited to move forward under her leadership and look forward to the ways she will inspire students, faculty, and staff to pursue excellence together.
