The following readmission categories pertain to former Cal State LA students who were admitted to and successfully completed at least one semester in a degree seeking baccalaureate program. Readmission consideration is based on both the academic standing when they left as well as whether they have attempted units since their enrollment in the Cal State LA degree program. Degree seeking students who are on an approved educational leave do not need to reapply for admission.
What is new for Fall 2018 admission?
As you review the information below, please take note of the following:
- The CSU has launched a new application system called Cal State Apply. You can find helpful CSU information at Cal State Apply. For some tips on how to complete the application, visit our Application Tips webpage.
- The new CSU application requires you to enter all college coursework so have your transcripts handy and make sure you have adequate time before the deadline to complete your application.
- Cal State LA has implemented a new admission approach for transfers and returning transfer students, focusing on lower division preparation in the major. Many majors now have Major-Specific Requirements for Admission.
Returning Student Admission Eligibility
Returning Transfer Student
If you left the Cal State LA degree program in good academic standing, or were on probation, and you have attempted units at another college/university or through the College of Professional and Global Education (PaGE) since you were in degree seeking status, you are considered a Returning Transfer Student. Returning Transfer Students are held to the same eligibility requirements, application procedures, and deadlines as new transfer students. They are also given 'local preference' for admission consideration. Refer to the Transfer Admissions webpage for details.
If you left the Cal State LA degree program in good academic standing, or were on probation, and you have not attempted units at another college/university, or through the College of Professional and Global Education (PaGE), since you were in degree-seeking status, you are considered a Returning Student.
- If you are applying to return to the same major, you will be evaluated for readmission based on your academic record and your ability to successfully complete the major in a timely manner including any degree progress requirements in that major.
- If you are applying to a different major, you will be evaluated based on the Major-Specific Requirements required of current Cal State LA students to declare the new major, and your ability to successfully complete the major in a timely manner.
Returning students may be required to meet with an academic advisor, and/or submit an academic plan consistent with the timely graduation policy, in order to be considered for readmission.
If you were academically disqualified from Cal State LA and wish to seek reinstatement, you must follow the application procedure and meet minimum eligibility requirements to qualify for consideration. Readmission after disqualification is not automatic. Students must wait at least two terms before applying for readmission. For readmission, students must satisfy the terms and conditions from the disqualification interview as documented in the student's file by the academic advisor. Students must also have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) that is at or above the minimum for their class level when they apply.

- Units earned elsewhere while under disqualification can be used to reduce the total grade point deficiency, but not the Cal State LA deficiency (which may be corrected through Open University enrollment via the College of Professional and Global Education).
- If you left the school because of math and/or English remediation, before returning to the University, you must have successfully completed a college-level transferable math and/or English composition course(s) with grades of 'C' or higher. If you have not done so, please plan to complete these courses at your local community college before returning to Cal State LA.
If the reinstatement request includes a change of major, you must have the support of the new major department and must meet the Major-Specific Admission Requirements for that major if applicable. Please remember that seeking readmission to the University requires a commitment of time, effort and financial resources on your part, with no guarantee of reinstatement even if all minimum requirements for consideration are met.
Returning Transfer Student
Be Aware: Returning Transfer Students are held to the same eligibility requirements, application procedures, and deadlines as new transfer students. Refer to the Transfer Admissions webpage for details.
- Apply online at Cal State Apply by the deadline.
- If previously disqualified, meet with an advisor from your last major department, and then submit the approved Undergraduate Petition for Readmission from Disqualification to the Admissions Office.
- Plan to submit official transcripts from colleges/university attended since leaving Cal State LA. For Fall readmission, transcripts should include courses and grades earned through the prior Fall term; for Spring readmission, transcripts should include courses and grades earned through the prior Summer term.

Once your application has been submitted, we will send you a notification by email to acknowledge receipt of your application. Once we receive all required transcripts and documents, we will notify you via email of your readmission decision. Please plan to regularly check your email, and promptly respond to requests.

ALERT! Returning students who are in freshman or sophomore standing cannot currently reapply using the online admission application. Please print, complete and submit the Returning Lower Division Student Admission Application by the stated deadline.

Once your application has been submitted, we will send you a notification by email to acknowledge receipt of your application. If you are a returning student applicant who has NOT attended another institution since leaving Cal State LA, we can usually make an admissions decision without additional documents. We will notify you if additional documents are required and the deadline for submitting them. Please plan to regularly check your email, and promptly respond to requests.
Be Aware: If you last attended Cal State LA more than 5 years ago, please plan to resubmit official transcripts from all other institutions attended.
Cal State LA uses email as the official means of communication with applicants. Applicants are required to maintain a current email address on file with the University, and to check their email regularly. You may update your email address at any time by visiting your Golden Eagle Territory (GET) Self-Service Student Center.
You will receive notification of your admission status by email after we have reviewed your application and any required documents. Admission offers may be withdrawn if the GPA, completed courses, or course grades are lower than what is reported or if you miss any admission deadlines. Please make sure to report accurate information on your application!
Do I need to respond to an acceptance notification?
Absolutely! In addition to submitting documents to verify the admission decision, newly admitted transfers are required to accept their admission offer and pay a non-refundable $100 Enrollment Confirmation Deposit by May 1st for Fall admission or December 1st for Spring admission in order to reserve a spot in the class. The deposit will offset a portion of the student's State University Fee.
What if I am not offered admission to Cal State LA?
In addition to applying to Cal State LA, we hope you have considered applying to one or two other colleges so that you will have alternatives in the event that you are not offered admission. If you are interested in pursuing another CSU as your backup, it may be in your best interest to submit a separate application with that campus during the initial filing period, as many campuses have early filing deadlines.
Can I appeal my admission decision?
Denials of admission are made only after an extensive review of academic qualifications and weighing those qualifications against the competitive nature of our applicant pool; therefore these decisions are rarely overturned and are considered only for extraordinary reasons beyond the control of the applicant.
Appeals must be submitted in writing within 15 days of the date on the denial notification and must include a basis for the appeal, and supporting documentation. We will notify you by email within 4 to 6 weeks, of our response to your appeal request. Only one appeal may be submitted for an academic term so the packet must be clear and compelling when submitted. For additional information, review the Appeal Process.

Orientation, Advising, and Registration: To help ensure a smooth transition to Cal State LA, returning students are required to participate in a one day Golden Eagle Orientation during the summer.
