Cal State L.A.’s Charter College of Education is reaccredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education
Distinguished for its impressive programs in the preparation of outstanding, effective and caring educators, counselors, and leaders, California State University, Los Angeles’ (CSULA) Charter College of Education (CCOE) was recently reaccredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
Professional accreditation enables the public to gauge if schools of education are graduating well-qualified teachers ready for today’s classrooms. CCOE has proven its commitment to producing quality teachers at the “teacher preparation and advance preparation levels” by achieving its accreditation under the “rigorous” performance-oriented standards of NCATE.
“Meeting the rigorous standards of NCATE is not an easy task, and the College’s ability to do so is reaffirmation from the entire professional education community,” said CSULA President James M. Rosser. “This recognition validates both the College’s and University’s efforts to educate teachers who are both skilled in their subject matter and in how best to lead, instruct and inspire others.”
Founded in 1954, NCATE’s standards—set forth by the professional education community—require teacher candidates to have in-depth knowledge of the subject matter that they plan to teach as well as the skills necessary to convey it so students learn. NCATE also requires a college or university to carefully assess the knowledge and skill of its faculty, and evaluate the individual units within its curricula.
In addition, schools or colleges seeking NCATE accreditation must have created partnerships with P-12 schools that enable teacher candidates to develop hands-on skills during field experiences and clinical practice. A college must also demonstrate that it prepares student teachers to understand and work with diverse student populations.
“This is a great honor, and I am so proud of the faculty, staff, students, graduates and community partners who collectively made this achievement possible,” said CCOE Dean Mary Falvey.
The CCOE is legendary for preparing teachers, specialists, leaders, counselor and school psychologists to serve children, youth and their families in urban areas. Its faculty and staff have supported a variety of community outreach programs throughout the Los Angeles basin, including partnerships with Los Angeles Unified School District and other schools and districts in urban areas of Los Angeles.
Along with teaching, the College’s students also go on to be successful in a variety of other careers in the field of education, such as counselors, psychologists, and leaders.
"I work as a resource specialist at Wilson High School. When I started working for the first time as a teacher, I realized how well CSULA prepared me to make an immediate impact in the work place,” said Nobuko Miyoshi, a former CCOE graduate student. “Curriculums at CSULA are based on practical skills and knowledge that are necessary in the field. Along with supportive faculties, I have learned essential knowledge through the courses at CSULA."
