California Subject Examination for Teachers (CSET)
CSET Requirement
If you do not hold a bachelor’s degree in a commission-approved subject matter program, then you must take and pass the California Subject Examination for Teachers (CSET), developed by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, to satisfy the subject matter competency requirement for becoming a teacher.
For the Single Subject Teaching Credential in Mathematics, students must pass the CSET: Mathematics Subtests I, II, and III. This credential authorizes teaching all mathematics coursework.
Subtest I: Number and Quantity; Algebra
Subset II: Geometry; Probability and Statistics
SubsetIII: Calculus
For the Single Subject Teaching Credential in Science, students must pass the CSET: Science Subtests I and II, which covers general science content, and Subtest III, which covers the candidates area of concentration. This credential authorizes teaching general and integrated science and the area of concentration.
Subtest I: General Physical Science
Subtest II: General Life Science
Subtest III: Area of Concentration

CSET Reimbursement
Cal State LA students are **eligible to apply for reimbursement of CSET test fees. If you are interested in applying for a reimbursement, please contact Dr. Angelique Hamane at [email protected] or fill out the following contact form to set up an appointment.
** Eligibility requirements:
- Students who are enrolled in Cal State LA's Charter College of Education's teacher credential program.
- Students who can provide a receipt for all sections of the CSET fees.
- CSET registration fees that were paid between July 1, 2016 and April 21, 2017.
- Requests that are made by Friday, April 21, 2017.
