On December 10th, the Institute held a Civic University for our 16 Youth Enrichment Policy Project (YEPP) youth leaders with participation from 15 youth leaders from Legacy LA. The day-long course was taught by the Institute’s Executive Director, Dr. Raphael J. Sonenshein, at Cal State LA. The students received an education about Boyle Heights political geography, demographics and voter turnout. Additionally, they learned to identify and define a public policy problem, and develop a plan to address it and make the system respond. The youth leaders chose to focus on two topics: youth development and police brutality. Students made mock presentations to the “city council” and received questions and feedback from their peers.
