On February 2, 2017 the Advancement Project California and the Pat Brown Institute for Public Affairs held the Participation + Power – A Los Angeles County Strategy Summit. The Summit was a half-day convening that brought together 100 elected and civic leaders from throughout the county representing the nonprofit, government, and academic sectors. The Summit provided recent research on political participation in the state and county, as well as created a space to share regional challenges and discuss potential strategies to strengthen democratic engagement. The day served as a way to answer questions such as:

  • How do we get more people involved in politics? How do we ensure that communities of color participate in the political process?
  • What can we do to protect communities that are vulnerable to a politics rooted in division? How can we use the strength of our diversity to reshape our local politics?

“Learned a lot about broadening civic engagement. Thinking outside the ‘silos.’”
