The Executive Committee of the Emeriti Association is placing in this section information volunteered by individual emeriti faculty members that demonstrates their continued involvement in professional activities such as publications, invited lectures, civic volunteer efforts, etc.
This is a call for submissions of information in these categories that you would like to appear on the website. Please do not send paper copy to be retyped into the website. Electronic submissions adhering to the strict format of the professional society appropriate to each individual's expertise will be accepted. RODEN, MARTIN
Martin Roden (Electrical Engineering) and Teressa Murphy (Retired IBM Vice President) co-authored a text, "Writing and Speaking for Technical Professionals". The text, published by Discovery Press in 2009, is for engineering and technical students and professionals interested in improving communication skills. This is Dr. Roden's 19th textbook.

COHEN, HAROLD (Physics and Astronomy)
Publication of a textbook entitled "Fundamentals and Applications of Complex Analysis", published by Kluwer Academic/Plenum Publishers, New York , 2003.
Continued active membership in the Mathematics Diagnostic Testing Project, a program that prepares tests and materials to test the readiness of students to take mathematics courses ranging from pre-algebra in 7th or 8th grade to calculus in 11th or 12th grade. The materials also give teachers information about the weaknesses of their students' mathematical skills.
Over the past 3 years, he has presented a program to students at Leal Elementary School and Wittman Elementary School . The topic is essentially "What is Electricity?" This presentation was also given (with a presentation on another topic by Prof. Don Paulson) at Montare Avenue Elementary School in South Gate .
DEWEY, DONALD O.
Donald O. Dewey (History) wrote essays on "The Supreme Court" and "Supreme Court Justices" for the three-volume Encyclopedia of the New Ameican Nation (New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 2005), edited by Paul Finkelman. In April 2004 Don spoke on "Stolen Elections: When the Presidential Election System Fails" at the Williamette University Institute for Continued Learning at Salem, Oregon. He was introduced by emeritus colleague Marion Dearmon (Sociology). The same lecture was presented to the Cal State LA Osher Life-Long Learning Institute the week before the November 2004 election. He and Ken Wagner (Political Science) were planning for a new chapter of their joint publication on Controversial Presidential Elections (2001) but the voters let them down.
Emeriti Kenneth A. Wagner and Donald O. Dewey published (with John T. Hyland) two curriculum books for secondary school teachers under the generic heading Becoming Informed Citizens . They are First Amendment Freedoms and Controversial Presidential Elections: The Electoral College and the Elections of 1800, 1824, 1876 and 2000. With a fourth author (Virginia S. Rettinger) they published three additional volumes in the series, Creating the Constitution, Changing the Constitution and Powers of Government. Dewey and Wagner also published The Federalist and Antifederalists. All six books and booklets were published in 2001 by Regina Books ( Claremont , CA ). A third emeritus faculty member, Richard D. Burns, is the publisher
Donald O. Dewey was keynote speaker for the 2004 meeting of the California Society for Colonial Wars. His topic was "The Last Colonial War and the Rise and Fall of Empire."
DUMITRESCU, DOMNITA (Modern Languages and Literatures)

At the International conference in Hispanic Literature, organized by the Instituto Literario y Cultural Hispánico at California State University, Dominguez Hills (March 6-8, 2013), she presented the life and work of the Argentinean poet Luis Alberto Ambroggio, in whose honor the Instituto had organized several special sessions. At the same conference, she also presented (with Gerardo Piña Rosales, the Director of the North American Academy of the Spanish Language, the edited book they recently published, El español en Estados Unidos: E pluribus unum? Enfoques multidisciplinarios (New York, 2013). She presented the same book at a special session at the 95 th Annual Conference of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (San Antonio, July 8-11, 2013) and at the 18 th Triennial Congress of the International Congress of Hispanists (Buenos Aires, Argentina, July 15-20), during the Encuentro de Investigadores en Lingüística. At the same congress, she read the paper entitled: "El cambio de código en la obra de Junot Díaz."

STAHL, FRIEDA
Frieda Stahl (Physics) has been working on historical and biographical interests pertaining to physics since her retirement in 1992. Her most recent paper, "Sarah Frances Whiting: A Foremother of American Women Physicists," was published in the November 2005 issue of American Journal of Physics. A previous paper, "The Emergence of Semiconductors: Nineteenth Century Modern Physics," appeared in that journal's November 2003 issue . She is the author of three articles for the Biographical Encyclopedia of Astronomers (Thomas Hockey, ed.; Springer, in press), on Hermann Weyl (1885-1955), Fred Whipple (1906-2004), and Sarah Whiting (1846-1927). She developed information for entries in the UCLA archive and website on the achievements of the most significant women in physics between the 1890s and the 1970s (http://cwp.library.ucla.edu), particularly on those in condensed matter physics and in college physics teaching. For a book based on that archive, Out of the Shadows (Nina Byers and Gary Williams, eds.; Cambridge University Press, in press), she co-authored two chapters, on Nobel Laureate Rosalyn Yalow and on Mildred Dresselhaus. In 2003 she was elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society, nominated by the APS Forum on History of Physics. Among her various activities in the American Association of Physics Teachers, she was most recently a member of its Committee on History and Philosophy of Physics and served as its Chair in 2002-3. The AAPT awarded her its Distinguished Service Citation in 2006. For the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) program on campus, she developed a course on "The Legacy of Albert Einstein" which she is teaching in Winter 2006.

SCHWARZ, LEON
Leon Schwartz (Modern Languages and Literatures) gave a lecture in Beverly Hills, CA, on May 16, 2004, to Migdal, an organization of retired professional people. His subject was "What's Novel about the Novel: the Long and Short of it." After the lecture, he was invited by a member of the audience, Hava Ben-Zvi, a writer, to help her prepare for publication a draft of an anthology of Polish-Jewish stories, translated from both Hebrew and Polish. He is also currently collaborating with Emeritus Professor Alfonso Gonzales and Professor Stella Clark on their translation from Spanish of Mexican writer Fernando Del Paso's 1994 publication, "Noticias del Imperio," a 900-page novelized story of the French in Mexico in the 1860's and the lives of the principal characters.
SCHWARZ, LEON
Leon Schwartz (French) was one of six limerick writers and the lead-off performer at the 2nd Annual Los Angeles Limerick Festival held at the Altadena Alehouse on 11-11-11. He read two dozen limericks of the 112 in his new book, Loose Goose: Limericks, 'Converbs,' and Other Rib-Ticklers, in press at Worthy Shorts (New York). It is expected to be in print by or before January 2012. They were broadcast by Mimi Chen on 100.3 FM radio on 11-12-11.
